Canon Rangefinder hood?????

Well, this looks like the right hood for the 40mm Chrome Canon RF f1.8 50mm lens, but it`s 42mm........

I bought it to use on my 1955 Canon f1.8 50mm but it`s not going to work, does anyone know if this was for the later "black barreled" f1.8 50mm and f2.8 35mm?

It`s 42mm and won`t work on my f1.8, does anyone have an adapter ring or something I could use, or maybe the right 40mm hood for trade?

Are you sure it is 42mm thread and not a Series VI thread? Most of the Canon hoods were either clamp on or designed to fit a series ring. I suspect that it is the right hood, but just missing the adapter ring. There were specific Canon ones and I recently got rid of mine in the rummage sale. However, there is a eBay seller in the US that carries most of them including 40mm ones for about $5 each.

I can't help you, Tom, other than to suggest you contact one of the ebay guys (Heavystar, American Eagle, ?) to see if they have a 40mm to 42mm stepup adapter. Looks like a nice hood otherwise.

Well, as I hold it to the 40mm it`s a tad too big and then I hold it to the back of the f1.5 50mm 42mm clamp on adapter ring it seems to be the same size as the threaded area, but won`t work with that ring

I have a 40mm (screw on) adapter ring and it does`nt work with that either, it has to be a 42mm thread to 40mm adapter that`s the way it looks,. while the bottom of the hood is tapered in instead of how the f1.5 50mm one is and that`s more straight down

This this came all the way from Australia and it`s a pain not to be able to use it, I was 100% certain it`s the right hood, but now to figure out how to attach it to the lens right......

Do you have the link to that ebay seller?????

Tom,

Another vote for Kim's answer - I have a complete one of these, and it is a 40mm clamp-on Series VI adapter that you need to fit this to the lens.
 
Here`s what I currently have....

The thought that the first ring would work, it`s got the Series VII (edit: SORRY I put VI before) markings and a screw in 40mm adapter, but it`s for a larger hood....the f1.5 hood screws right into that as well

The next photos are the f1.5 hood with the 42mm clamp on adapter ring and this ring does`nt work either......

The dammm hood rings and adapters are just as confusing as all the Canon Rangefinder model letters and numbers!!!!

I`M CONFUSED 😛 I guess this would have to be a 42mm to 40mm????

I still don`t know which one is the right one, I have to see a photo of it, who else is currently USING this hood?

That is surprising, that was my guess, and what I was heading up to pull out and photograph. I don't have that 1.8 hood, but wonder now if it is for an SLR lens?
 
I have a couple of hoods in satin silver finish that look like this black one- makes me think that it is an RF hood, and not a SLR hood. They are even marked in the identical manner

Tom, I may have a spare Canon ring that will fit this, but I would need to go through my stash of Canon stuff once I get home.

Well, what mm thread were the late f1.8 "black barreled" lenses???? Also 40mm???

The engraving really looks like mid 1950`s RF era styled though......unless this is for like a Canonflex??? (that stuff`s crazy too, no one uses it!)

I really wonder what the mystery is with this one????

I thought I had it figured out by buying that first ring and adapter
(the screw in 40mm) because even the f1.5 hood works on/in that as well

OK, I have tried to hunt through some old pics but I can't find the ones I am looking for. The 1.5 hood is not a series adapter as far as I know. It is a Canon type B. I had a different hood on a type C mount on which the thread was different and matched to the hood.

The other ring in your pics is a series VII not a series VI. I had a chrome hood which had the identical marings to your black one and it was definately Series VI. The Canon adapters that are threaded Series are mrked as such. The funny clamp ones are not. The only one that might have been was the S50 ring which was close to Series VII.

I still think it is Series VI but it doesn't fit either of yours because they are not Series VI.

I hope that makes sense.

The 1.4 was 48mm thread. The 1.5, 1.8 and 2.8 were all 40mm.

Yes, it finally does!!!!

I wrote the wrong series before (sorry) so I guess Series VI is the only one I don`t have.....does anyone know if that`s a step-down from 42mm to 40mm?

I guess that`s going to be just as hard finding that ring as it was the hood....it came all the way from Australia, I hope I don`t have to look that far for a ring that works!

Check with Dexdog (post 10). He may have one. If not, check out the link I put in post 6. The series VI you are looking for should be the 40 Ednalite. If you contact the guy, he is very helpful, quick to reply and should send the right one if you ask. Not a Canon one true but for $5 plus shipping, you can hardly go wrong.

PS: Kim did you sell that amazing Black M3 you had? Man if I had had the cash, that would have made the ultimate Retro "user" camera....just finding a "black paint" 50 Cron would have been next to impossible
(or does Luton paint lenses as well- I know that`s CRAZY work to do - but a RIGID early 1960`s Cron or Summilux would have been killer to see on that)

the first pic is a hood for the 50/1.8 lens when used with the 42mm clamp on or 40mm screw in series VI adapter.
same hood with 36mm clamp on or 34mm screw in can be used on the chrome 35/f2.8 lens.
the thread on the series VI hood without the adapter is also a 42mm in dia.
the Canon 50/f1.5 uses a series VII hood because of the larger lens opening and no vignetting will happen.
the adapter is also 42mm clamp on or 40mm screw in but larger on the other side for series VII filters.

I have bought this same black hood some days ago, to mount it on the Canon 50mm f/1.8 you need a 40mm > Series VI adapter.
Quite difficult to find an original Canon one, i found a black Tiffen on the Bay.
(look for "macintoshcat" on the Bay)
I also have the chrome one with the adapter for 35mm f/2.8, thats 34mm to series VI.
