Yes, I only use the "A" setting when I'm feeling very lazy. You can use this camera in full manual mode, so if you have a handheld meter, you can shoot away. Setting the aperture dial to "A" is what sets the camera to "shutter priority" mode, and selects the aperture according to the shutter speed you've chosen.
The lightmeter dial in the viewfinder/rangefinder shows which aperture will be used according to the shutter speed you've selected. Again, the lightmeter is only on when you set the "A" aperture dial. It will always be on if you leave the dial set to "A", so always remember to set it to an actual aperture number when you're going to put your QL G-III away.
Also, the shutter won't fire if, when you're using the "A" mode, it's either overexposed or underexposed, according to its lightmeter.

The only thing the battery is for is to run the light meter. The rest of the camera is fully manual.

Congrats Gabriel on the Canonet QL17, I shoot both black and white and colour through this camera and honestly I find people are blown away by the quality of the pictures. Their jaws drop when I show them the camera.

One of the best reactions I got was last week and I know I've reported it here in other threads. This was when showing it to the typical Mr. Digital who just dropped the better part of a kilobuck on the Latest And Greatest<tm> with all the trimmings ...
DigitalGuy: You paid less than $50 for that camera and it takes pictures like that?
Me: Uh, I paid less than $50 for it and I take pictures like that! {touche'}

No! You say: "did I say $50? I got it for $500.00 + $50 s/h. I can get you one for $400.00"

yes sure, it's a fully mechanical camera though there's an auto mode. It's very similar to Olympus 35 SP
