Hi guys.

This is my first post on here after lurking in the background for about a month, most questions i had were answered by reading through the archive of threads. I find the wealth of knowledge amongst the contributors to be phenomenal.

I would like to ask a question about my camera case. My canonet arrived from America a few days ago and seems to be in good working order, the case however is a different story. It closes and fits and has all the correct clasps in all the right places but it looks like something you would dig out of the earth.

I was wondering if anyone had re-upholstered or restored their case or knew of anyone in the UK who might undertake such a task.

I know it might seem pretty pointless but i fail to see the point in having a wonderfull rangefinder and stuffing it into a modern case or camera bag.

Thanks in advance.
Phill.

Phill,
Nearly all of the GIII cases are next to useless now with cracking etc. About the only "period" cases that are still usable are the hard plastic ones from the previous model (The "New" Canonet). These tend to be in a usable condition but the downside is that they do tend to produce rub marks on the body.

Thanks for the response guys & thankyou for the welcome.

Light seals are the next job, i spent 3 hours yesterday removing the old ones with acetone, matchsticks and cotton buds.

I'm happy to use it without the case but it just looks so retro whilst sat inside it i need to satisfy my 'yuppie urge' and get the case either restored or replicated.

If i get anything sorted i'll post results on here so people can replace theirs if neccessary.

Have a good week.

Phill.

Welcome to the forum. I know what you mean about wanting a case. I always did too. Then I got one with my second Canonet. It is usable but shows some of its age. But now that I have it, surprisingly, I am not crazy about using it. You may find you feel the same after using it a while.

i guess i must be lucky 😀

my q19 i just got has a case in "mint" (for its age) condition case.

its a pretty tought leather one ay?

even the little canon QL badge is still there 🙂

and i would have to agree they are never ready cases, i assume you mean due to the time it takes to get it out of the case?

Yeah, cases are hard to find in good condition. I was lucky when I got my GIII...the case is in woderful condition. I really only use the case, though, when I'm only taking along the one camera. Generally, the top stays at home, and I just feel that I'm giving the camera a bit more protection by using the half-case as a buffer against the potential knocks, scrapes, and dings it might incur when slung over a shoulder or around the neck. I often will carry two rangefinders in a small shoulder bag, and as it has divided compartments, they sit "naked" in the shoulder bag ready for a grab-n-shoot!

Regards!
Don
