Can't batchscan 120 on Vuescan..

Hi.. Hoping someone can help me with this..

I've been happily scanning 135 on my Nikon Coolscan 9000 with vuescan for many months.. No issues with batch preview, lists, batch scanning whatsoever.. I've been shooting more 120 film lately and want to start scanning it.. I've spent half the night with Vuescan and it will only preview and scan one image from the three that I load into the standard plastic tray, regardless of the fact that I have it set up to batch, and list etc.. Also I can only get it to preview/scan the first image.. I can't seem to input 2 and get it to scan the second image-- or the third.. very frustrating.. Please help..

Viewscan had trouble with 120 film in the standard holder if you wanted to scan more than one frame at once. If I remember right, you could preview and scan a different frame than the first, but only if you were not batch scanning. It doesn't bother me, because I use the rotating glass carrier for everything (the quality improvement is literally night and day, and is worth the hassle of only getting one frame at a time to scan...that carrier only allows one frame to show at once).

I've had that same problem with the 9000ED and Vuescan when I had little contrast difference between the negative edges and the interframe area. It was as if Vuescan could not detect separate and distinct frames. That particular roll was scanned one frame at a time.

Even when individually scanning frames vuescan only recognizes the first frame. Frame one gets scanned regardless of the frame number I input in the field (1 2 or 3).. I would love to figure out and correct this...

Chris, I see that there are two upgraded glass film trays for 120 film on the Nikon. One of them has rotates like yours and of them does not. The rotating one only holds one negative. What is the benefit of being able to rotate the negative in the tray? Do you cut all your 120 film into one frame strips?

I never use the rotate feature, but I suppose it might be useful if you have a picture with a tilted horizon. The reason I bought the rotating one instead of the regular glass carrier is the regular carrier requires you to stick strips of sticky plastic tape on the bottom of each strip of film to fill the gaps between the images. This prevents flare and stops newtons rings, but is a real pain, and I am not sure what you're supposed to do when you run out of the tape strips they supply. The rotating carrier is better designed; it includes a set of reusable plastic masks that you lay on the glass under the film that masks off the clear film edges and prevents newton's rings be slightly elevating the film off the bottom glass. The carrier will take strips of 120, up to four 645 negs or three 6x6 on a strip, but only one image at a time shows through the mask.

Thanks Chris, sounds like it may be worth the investment to buy the upgraded glass rotating carrier.. Still it bothers me that Vuescan is unresponsive (scanning 1 regardless of what number I input). Will I have a better experience if I switch to SILVERFAST?

I don't know, I've never used Silverfast...way overpriced. It costs $500 for the Nikon 8000/9000 scanners 🙁
