Capitol

I sometimes feel some of our US cousins live on a different planet to the rest of us.
+1
At least about half of them. Takes quite the tunnel vision to be afraid of "socialism", should a party whose mainstream positions are hardly left of the conservative parties in Europe come into office.

Yes, for the half that skipped classes on 20th century history.

Has anyone taken any pictures lately??

Every day. Regardless of the **** show going on.
It's how I manage to retain some shred of what I purport to be my sanity.

Sanity? I lost mine months back. :) :(

Hold on to hope...

“Hope is a slighter, tougher thing even than trust... In a good season one trusts life; in a bad season one only hopes. But they are of the same essence: they are the mind's indispensable relationship with other minds, with the world, and with time. Without trust, a man lives, but not a human life; without hope, he dies. When there is no relationship, where hands do not touch, emotion atrophies in void and intelligence goes sterile and obsessed. Between men the only link left is that of owner to slave, or murderer to victim.”
- City of Illusions, Ursula K. Le Guin

Maybe our European friends can let us know if the Hunter Biden laptop and Tucker Carlson's interview of Bobolinksy were on broadcast news? The news media here except for Fox news ignored it before the election and said the laptop was a Russian plot. That's funny because someone would have had to drop it off and sign Hunter Biden's name on the repair slip and have Hunter in sex videos on the hard drive. Twitter, Facebook and others censored it. Now does this sound like a country that allows free speech no matter how much you disagree with it? Twitter, Facebook and Google are now in the electronic book burning stage and demonizing someone or groups's character that started WWII. There shouldn't be one person here that is in favor of censoring any free speech or news. I thought the democrats was the tolerant group?
There is no excuse for the violence at the Capital as there is no excuse for the burning of business's during the summer but only one side was condemned and the other side received a pass. I remember the newsman reporting live how how the protest has been peaceful when there was a building burning down behind him.

Well, as far as I know, Hunter Biden was mentioned here a couple of times in connection with dumb conspiracy theories that apparently plague right wing politics in the US.

Other than that nobody really gives a toss about Hunter Biden: He wasn't running for president was he.

This thread is getting sillier by the minute and in my view doesn't resonate with OP´s intentions anymore – to say the least. Just saying :)

That's the spirit! News is like a buffet. Eat only what's agreeable with you. Burning cities, armed occupations and silence from Joe & Co, because the "cause was just!". I get it.

If nothing else, this thread is a good case study for the importance of basic media literacy...

Or education levels. Some people think that because they think something, it must be true.... So sad.

As someone who is neutral to either side, and well educated, I see a huge difference between the protests over the summer and what just happened. The protests over the summer were due to a long history of black men being killed by police let's not forget. That doesn't mean that any looting or crime is excusable. It isn't. But that doesn't mean that there is an equivalence either. There was a lot of violence during those protests done by the right wing whackos. Bugaloo Boys killing police. Right wingers showing up at protests with automatic weapons. The list goes on. What just happened at the Capitol though was pure lunacy by one set of people whipped into a frenzy by the President and his enablers. There is no evidence of election fraud. Multiple courts have said so. Judges appointed by Trump himself said so. Yet these idiots bought the fantasy of those trying to control their thought. Any sane person could see it. I guess now they are going to reap the rewards for their own lunacy. I just hope that the violence stops, but I doubt it. Seems a certain portion of our population has gone off the deep end. Trying to overthrow an election because you don't like the result is about as far from a patriot/citizen as you can be.

Anyone thinking that Trump being thrown off Twitter or any other platform has anything to do with free speech, you missed your constitution class when you were young, or you are just plain dumb. Private companies can do whatever they want. Your free speech rights are related only to the government. So get a clue. Also, free speech does not include inciting an insurrection. Like duh...

You seem to have forgotten "the other side" talking about impeachment in December 2016, even before inauguration. Which they carried through with later on.

Recognizing the ill climate all around is the first step to finding a remedy. Not repeating a mantra that "the other side has lost its mind!". Both sides are looking at each other saying the same thing, forgetting its own sins.

Having watched and dealt with Donald Trump's antics for the past forty years as he failed time after time to be an honest, sensible, or even successful businessman, I knew he was unfit for office even before the GOP nominated him as a candidate for their bid in the 2016 election. He's a pathological narcissist and a wholly-self-interested demigogue: a person genuinely unfit to run for *any* public office as he has neither the emotional temperment or the understanding of what it means to be a public servant representing the people of the United States.

Nothing that has happened at his behest has surprised me. I've been expecting this senseless violence and drama to be stirred up by him and his sycophantic political supporters (and all the other political subversives who seek to use his celebrity) since before he was elected.

The major thing which January 6 just made clear to any objective observer is that this person and these people are there, are looking to destroy the government of the United States and replace it with a dictator that they like (himself in the instance of Donald Trump), and that they are a major danger to the entire world. And that they should all be censured and held accountable for their intent and actions with penalty to the maximum level possible under the law with no leniency. Every single one of them.

End of story. No debate entertained.

Do appreciate you proving my point.

Thanks!

Here's another link to hopefully takes us back on-topic. It features stories from 5 photojournalists about what it was like to document the event at the US Capitol. Although the images are certainly striking, what struck me was the professionalism of the press photographers, especially in the midst of chaos and violence. To quote Bill's OP:

If you see any other sites where you think the photographers deserve a round of applause, add them to the list.

p.s. Some forum members seem intent on partisan debates, which IMHO are not only unproductive (who are you going to convince in an internet argument?), but also counter-productive as they just increase the divisiveness and "us vs. them" mentality. If you want to devolve into name-calling, trolling, and baiting (all counter to the forum rules), I respectfully ask that you please take it to other platforms.

I really try to avoid political discussions and true believers on both sides of the political spectrum. During the previous election 4 years ago, I did not vote. I could not understand why I was expected to choose between two of the most reprehensible human beings on earth to head the country of my birth. After that election, I decided to play fair and give the guy a chance. Trump espoused some (actually quite a few) things I agreed with but he presented his ideas in an abrasive manner and that put me off. I also felt the news media was being unfair to him by constantly reporting negatively on his presidency. So I just hung back and figured it was the same old same old, liberal media bashing a Republican once more.

So after a year or so of this watching from the sidelines, I began to become a little disturbed. The more I read, the more I realized Mr. T was sounding more like the arrogant jerk I couldn't vote for months before. I read and watched both liberal and conservative media, just as I have done for most of my life. What I discovered was that many of the conservative editorialists who had previously presented positive opinions on our president were beginning to criticize more and more often. These were rational people I respected, not flaming lefties. They had one thing in common with liberals--they had begun to realize this guy was becoming irrational, tweeting to the choir and using one of the tactics of the far left media of the 1960s--if you tell a lie often enough people will begin to believe it. So I've watched this soap opera comedy of US politics for a few years and it's gone from hilarious dumbassery to frightening absurdity.

I'm afraid there's no common ground anymore. Everyone seems to want to pick a side and never consider hearing anything anyone else has to say. Truth has always been subjective but facts are invaluable, inviolate and unassailable. The facts no longer matter. People interpret the facts to fit their truth. I'm afraid for our country, our world.
