Capitol

Like I said pages ago -
Not a great idea to open this up here in hopes that it would simply be a discussion about photography.
I know that no one here asked for my opinion BUT

I've lost a lot of respect for some posters here. :( ...people who have interesting ideas about cameras, photography and art BUT insist on making the events of Wednesday a chance to show their political/philosophic beliefs.

This is not a "Both Sides" issue... Sure, we all need to figure out how to listen to each other and find common ground, but that does not mean that what happened Wed is the same as protesting this summer. Just not the same - at all. If you can't see that - you won't listen to me - just like if you really believe the voting fraud lies...

AND, all that said, my words here won't likely change your mind.

That common ground here should be about photography - IMHO

Cassel,

How True,
it is so multi faceted there are Never Two Sides
Just like Photography, lots of GREY

I was not strictly speaking about two Parties...
Just sides against sides , whatever side one chooses to be on
nor do I have a political agenda
There is no Government that does not have some blood on it's hands
Just look at history

No easy Task ahead for the ENTIRE World in general ...
Be interesting to see it in 'Pictures;' when words fail

As for Bill’s thread
This might prove to be a busy year for Photographers

Whether they are Covering:
Differing Political Agendas, Covid, Vaccines, Unemployment, Evictions & the New coming Homeless...
The list will go on and on
and that’s just dealing in US soil
Not even discussing Foreign Policies and Affairs , lol

Yes, and we can add climate changes and migrations...all over the world...

So they were just for show? Continue to fabricate excuses...

Chris

..and amnesia for the lawlessness, insurrections and chaos of the summer? Candidate Biden (and his handlers) were utterly silent throughout it all. Conveniently swept under the psychological rug. Mindless, hateful Mob violence begets more mindless, hateful Mob violence.

Use Newton's 3rd Law of Motion as a reference point.

I don't know why people are surprised at what happened. The news media and social media has been censoring the news to what it wanted people to see. For 3 years the Democrats and news media were selling Trump and the Russians stole the election and even after the Mueller report stated no collusion was found the news media and their guest went on to say it happened and the host never questioned were the proof was. Hunter Biden's laptop was confirmed to be at the FBI but yet the news media, Twitter, Facebook and others said there was no evidence, but strangely enough after the elections the news media reported on Hunter Biden's laptop and him being under investigation. If only one thing is remembered from the last 4 years is the news media and the Democrats and some Republicans don't want an informed people. It makes it much easier to govern when 80 % of the people have no clue about what elected officials motives are. Maxeen Waters is on video telling everyone to to get in the face of anyone in the Trump administration and not one of the main stream news stations said it was wrong and ask her about dividing people and promoting violence. I could go on and on but it won't change anyone's minds so what's the point.

Those who make thinly veiled excuses for the behavior at the US capitol are complicit in the dissolution of democracy here in the USA. Stating some red herring type quid pro quo that there was justification for a person in Washington DC to have IEDs and weapons stockpiled and ready for use is abhorrent. That is not equivalent to a professional security officer using warranted deadly force when faced with a threat at the seat of US democracy. What we saw on 11/6/2021 was not some fun rally and was not remotely equivalent to any BLM protests of the past several years. A person stating such should also stand behind the thought that those who stormed the US capitol should have been treated the exact same as the protesters in the BLM protests: rubber bullets, teargas, batons, mass arrest. Instead, most were simply let go and now those who support them are slinking back into the shadows. Those persons who support or make excuses for this unprecedented attack on the US democratic process are not patriots, they are fascists. They can't see it and will never believe they are anything other than patriotic, but make no mistake, these are people who support autocratic rule in the USA. Fascists. Please don't forget it.

True. Tens of thousands took part in the violent occupations of Seattle and Portland and torching of major cities (including storming the Kavanaugh SCOTUS hearings the year before) while a few hundred super-nasties charged the Capitol. The latter deserve whatever draconian punishment awaits them, especially their leadership.

Leaders of the former will probably get cabinet positions.

I sympathize with your post, but this was your mistake. I lost respect for other members here long ago. Many of them are simply incapable of acting like adults when any kind of political opportunity presents itself (especially james.liam who has continuously fought to derail this thread). I don't mean this disrespectfully, but by allowing this thread to continue on its current trajectory, Bill, Doug, Stephen, etc. are complicit in the further degradation of the quality of RFF. As these kinds of threads that delve into politics continue to play out over and over again, even if they are outside of the mainstream RFF areas, I find myself less interested in participating in other areas of the forum, and I think others feel this way as well. This is a place to discuss photography, not politics. It has a serious impact on the forum quality as a whole. I know the intention of the thread was not to provoke this discussion, but I hope the mods and admin consider being more active in steering the conversation away from politics in the future. I know some deleting of posts and/or members has already occured, but still.

In Ontario we are not allowed to ski on hills, while covid infested toronto has skating rinks open.
Went on bicycle on the top of escarpment today to see closed slops. Groups from not same household, walking together no distancing, no masks.
Yet, they closed these ski slops where we have to wear mask and keep distance.

Beautiful snow!
Here in NYC no indoor restaurant dining permitted but outdoor dining in cold but unventilated enclosed shacks is. Riding on a likewise sealed subway car for 1/2 an hour in close proximity of 100 other people is also deemed acceptable.

This thread was allowed to meander by the Mod. Things meander. If I respond, it's because an opinion expressed with nothing to back it up will is a mere emotional outburst. A little like your reactions. WADR.

Nonetheless, stay safe out there.

In the spirit of Bill Pierce’s original request, I found the inside take of Saul Loeb, the photographer who took the picture of the guy in Speaker Pelosi’s office well worth the read. Here’s the link

Every day. Regardless of the **** show going on.
It's how I manage to retain some shred of what I purport to be my sanity.

G

Sanity? I lost mine months back. :) :(

Even here in Australia those of us who follow international news (well it's international to us) understand how important the outcome is to the world. I won't say any more as I do not want to provoke a controversy here. I know it will not change minds so I will keep it for other venues.

As to photos, yes I am trying to keep making photos but its hard when distracted by world affairs. I have also been using the opportunity to post process some existing images. Here is one from a trip to Hong Kong several years ago. I published it in color then but just recently I reworked it as a mono image. I think I prefer this one somehow. I especially like "super woman" on the left (well somehow she reminds me of Superwoman with that resolute look and firm gaze.) I also like the way the background has reproduced not as "super bokeh" but just nice blur that gives a kind of natural 3D look.

This is one I did take recently. A candid photo on a bus. I love the way the light falls on her face. In photography it is always about the light.

peterm1 I love your picture. The Hong Kong protests go virtually un-noticed in the US. The Wall Street publishes articles, recently how a Youtube (?) video posted by a young women received a lengthy prison sentence for posting videos online of how the Chinese government controlled the Wunhan outbreak. Was it posted in the Australian news? In the US we are under going the same type of news repression. I'm not a fan of our president but all news must be suppressed about the president and his supporters unless the news evil.

Your post is incoherent at the end. ‘news evil’? What?

I’m genuinely offended you would equate the situation in Hong Kong with that in the US. I sometimes feel some of our US cousins live on a different planet to the rest of us.

Try some international news media why don’t you? They are freely available to you unlike those in much of China. Enlighten yourself, it’s quite the thing.
