Thank you for being there, and getting in and out safely. This is a great series. Can you comment more on the context? Like on tv I don't see much police presence at all. At what stage during or after the breach were these taken?
I was on the other side of the Capitol, which was not quite as rowdy, but people still got up onto the steps. Not paid to be there, but I live eight blocks from the Capitol and feel protective of it. I took a few shots with my M240; not as good as the pros, but I also didn't want to wade to deep into the largely mask-free crowd.

Thanks! I was there between about 2-4 p.m., so during the time the breach was happening. I didn't know it was happening. I did see that people were getting on the steps on both the East and West sides of the Capitol, which is not allowed. I didn't realize they had broken in until a bit later, when my phone started going off with alerts from people I know.
There were police there; I saw about three dozen in full riot gear. People in the crowd were yelling at them as they suited up. I couldn't see where they went but I imagine they went to the West front to try to keep people out. I did hear several flash-bangs go off.
My plan was to walk around the Capitol and back up the hill. I was working that day and needed to get back! But the crowd was too large to go around it so I stayed mostly on the East front. It was like the "party" side of the Capitol, where the West front was where most of the fighting occurred.
I overheard one of the Trump supporters saying someone had been shot and decided that would be a good time to leave.

There's nothing surprising about the actions of a riled up mob anywhere, anytime. What's different about this one is that it was deliberately incited by the President of the United States and his close associates, and directed against those he viewed as his adversaries (other elected officials).

I am not American and I don't have a dog or horse in any race but it is easy to go look up that "tool and fool for hire" Jake Angeli on the social media and find photos in his ridiculous getup at different organisations.
I pity these naive folks who buy into these carnivals..these politicians are about as real as WWF wrestlers no matter what political stripe they define themselves with....Orangeman , Dementia Biden ... they are the two sides of the same coin, all actors and they control nothing....Harry S Truman lied to you all....the buck does not stop with him...it never has.

Posting a thread about what happened at the Capitol yesterday is not a great idea - it won't be about cool photos taken there - it just becomes a place for people to espouse their political views.

All this reminds me of the anti Vietnam war riots, protest, violence that I saw in the 60's. And BTW every news source that was quoted or referred to are in the pocket of the Democratic Party. How about some parity here?

While I don't enjoy seeing or glorifying any display of yahoos (and low information voters,yes both sides have those) at our nation's Capitol, I have to admit, if I were living close in as LeicaOSeries, and could have availed myself a safe opportunity to photograph the event that transpired yesterday, I certainly would have done just that.
LeicaOSeries, this thread is richer because of your contribution of these images as a participant on this forum. I will choose to discard some of the opinions about what happened yesterday, or this summer and the editorializing about Portland and Seattle. That aside, I would not wish this thread to go away.
Thank you for your contribution and bravery in getting out there with what could have been a volatile situation for you as it was for others yesterday, and as alluded to by the OP. And thank you Bill for the links.

Bizarre that some people live in a different reality, with different facts. I will never understand the desire to indulge in "Both Sides" and "Parity" thinking...
Like I said - this is a dumb place to discuss politics - there is no changing of minds - just people looking around with confirmation bias.🙁

Few weeks ago there were crazies right here in Olympia, Wa. Right downtown at the capital building two sides provoking each other. I stay away from crazies no matter their political stripe. No sir, don’t need a mensa card in my wallet to figure that out.

For some reason there was a riot declared in Portland the other night - yet another attack on the Courthouse or City Hall:

This has been going on since Spring - I think there were over 100 straight days of violent confrontation with the Portland police. Initially, these “peaceful protests” appeared on local news, but I wouldn’t be surprised if the networks quickly ignored it.
People who had been arrested during that time were released - with charges later dropped because Portland city government / the DA / whatever aren’t of a mind to charge them. No surprise.
From what I’ve been told, being out in daylight is ok but after dark things can become unpredictable there.
I used to love Portland and Seattle. No more.

I agree Raid. I have not experienced it personally but my father did and he had plenty of horror stories. Enough to last me a life time. And give me an ardent desire to oppose radicals of all stripes. That is all I will say on the matter. I know how inflammatory this subject is. And I know the side on which I stand.

Thank you! It really didn't feel very dangerous until the end. And, I have thought about doing some B&W versions, so I'll play around with that.
What's griping me right now is there's a seven-foot fence being deployed around the Capitol grounds for at least a month, maybe longer. These yahoos go smashing around the Capitol and then go back home, but leave some ugliness behind. DC has enough barricades and bollards and security fences as it is.
I go running and biking on the Capitol grounds and this summer made some fun photographs of the crescent moon next to the dome. My wife and I exercise regularly on the steps by the visitor center. Can't do any of that now. My worry is that the Capitol Police won't ever take the fence down; they failed to protect the building but it's easier to leave up a fence than figure out what went wrong in their decision making.
I know it sounds like a minor thing, but the Capitol is the anchor of the neighborhood and could be taken out of reach because some folks didn't get their way.

I was in college in the early '70's and had a number of good friends from Iran. I always remember one telling me that the Iranian revolution happened because 10% where on the far left, 10% on the far right, and 80% who didn't care because they were prosperous and doing well.
At my age I fear the same might be happening here.
