CL as backup?

Hi,

can a CL make a good backup to an M4? My M4 went bonkers last week and it's been at the clinic since then, and being without camera can be quite frustrating.... I've also got a 40mm lens which is another reason for the CL temptation.

Any thoughts on that matter?

The CL is very nice and I think it would work well as a back up..
Depends on what you are shooting though.
Faster lenses than f2 will be hard to focus correctly.
I am selling my CL to get a M2 instead, want that accurate focusing.

But if you are shooting mostly street and selldom wide open the CL will be your best pal!

I only have f2 lenses and don't plan on getting anything faster. Though it seems to be some lighter (plastic?) construction, and for $200 extra would be the price M2 or M3... Tough choice.

I have a CL w a 1.4sc Voighlander, I can focus fine. I love the CL it is easy to carry an has an M mount. Also have an M4-P.

As stated by on the Cameraquest website, "The CL makes an ideal 2nd body to your M for those lightweight situations where you don't want to carry a heavier camera." And I would agree. See: http://www.cameraquest.com/leicacl.htm

and it has a built in meter that is accurate.

i would go for a cle myself but the cl is a fine little camera.

Alley, you're right and so would I, there was a CLE the other day in the classified but the seller found the camera to be non working as I was going to pay for it. So it could be a warning not to get into electronic cameras =)

Well, the CL I was thinking of getting got sold so it seems it'll be for next time...

I got a CL precisely for that reason - as a backup for my M6. But I like it so much I often carry it on its own - it's so much smaller and lighter I can just stick it in a coat pocket when I'm not out with a camera bag.

I would feel a little bit guilty if your own tales of numerous trials of new cameras and lenses hadn't caused me to go out and buy them myself too, so Im glad I finally got you back! 😉

CL with a Rokkor 28mm adding a Voigtlander mini 28/35 finder. Perfect compact finder on a CL, the black version looking like it was made for it and still remaining compact AND giving you 28 and 35mm framelines which the CL doesnt have either. 28, 35, 40, 50, 90mm frameline combo all in the most compact M package there is.

Does that help or make things worse? 😀

My variation on this is to use a Canon 28/3.5 lens (which is very small and needs no hood as the front element is so recessed into the lens body) on a CL without using my 28/35 minifinder and, instead, simply use the entire CL viewfinder to approximate the 28 framelines (a wee stretch, but it works if you don't wear glasses). As much as I like the minifinder, I like the small form factor of the CL, particularly with the tiny Canon 28, and don't want to add any additional protrusions if I can avoid it. Of course, I do carry my CL in its Luigi half case so I have "bulked it up" just a bit already.

yeah, i saw that...too late, what a good price with the lens included.

well, my little cle is ready for the world, with my zeiss grip and luigi wrist strap!
i cheated a bit, and took the strap that luigi so generously gifted some of us with and had it made into 3 wrist straps, one a touch longer for using with gloves on.

At the risk of shameless self-promotion, I also have a CL listed in the ads here, though it's a full kit. The CL is the most under-appreciated camera in the M line, even more than the M5.

maybe if you were offering them as seperate componets it would sell easier.
