i have the option to buy this quite beaten up hexar af titanium. the seller described these as cleaning marks on the lens but i have never seen cleaning marks like this. what do you think?

Main problem is future resale value, if that matters. Buy it for the right price and enjoy.
Not seeing it in person, it looks like the coating is coming away, either through a manufacturing defect or rough cleaning/storage conditions. The mottled coating will likely have little effect in practice. However if the camera has other signs of abuse then I would be cautious as mechanical repairs on a Hexar AF are probably not cost effective. If it was around a salt water environment then pass immediately!
If a nice clean AF is $400 then maybe this one is a $250 model?

This isn't a rare camera, and I don't see a reason to buy a camera that someone has beaten to hell and back. This applies to most cameras.
If you can get it cheap, sure, try it. If you're buying it, because it's all you can afford, I'd continue to save my money and buy one that's in better condition.

I could be totally wrong, but it kind of looks like lighting reflections...are there any other photos from different angles? It appears to be lit from directly above the lens...

Thanks for the input. Its the only picture of the lens i have. After diggin a bit into ebay and i realized would be able to grab a black one in much better condition for the same cash if i just wait for one to pop up in my area.
Nice to meet the man behind GAS Station. Very good work

I agree. Nothing on the photo to suggest marking of the lens. You can see the photog in silhouette.

lets put it this simple and easy way
if it's $1xx, go for it, otherwise let it go

It hardly looks beaten to hell and back, nor quite beaten up, judging from the one photo. In fact, I don't see a thing wrong w/ it. Those are reflections. I don't see much wrong w/ the base plate either. Probably just needs a wee bit of cleaning. Remind me to never sell a camera to you guys!
