Is it "normal" for my Leica M6 viewfinder to appear to be spot on until I get closer than 1m or so. At that point, the vertical RF alignment doesn't line up. My M3 stays lined up all the way.

Problem?
Easy for a tech to fix?

Thanks

I assume you're holding the camera horizontally and are refering to the position of the secondary (moving) image being slightly higher or lower than the primary image. This is not unusual in the many M cameras I've seen over the years, but it's a gradual progression in position change through the focusing range, not abrupt as you describe. Typically, you'll see it if for example, if the image alignment within the patch is perfect at infinity but gradually becomes slightly higher or lower at the minimum focus (0.7 m is worst). Some M's are better assembled than others where the problem is nil or nonexistent, but usually it's not bad enough to make focusing difficult. Also keep in mind that some of of it may be induced by viewing error through the eyepiece. Try adjusting your eye position slightly while looking through the finder to minimize the vertical misalignment.

So, I cannot get it to look correct by moving my eye around. Can this issue be fixed by a repair shop? Or is it something that comes from the factory and has to stay that way?

I would talk to Sherry Krauter or Don Goldberg about correcting the problem although it's not a simple fix, if at all. You might have to compromise and have the vertical adjustment set at a point that splits the difference between near and far so both will now be slightly off but in opposite directions and to a lesser degree than the amount currently under 1 meter. If Sherry can do it, use her. Don, while one of the best and cheapest, will probably take about 3 months or more because he's always backed up.
