Collapsible 50mm Summicron on an R-D1?

Hi John,

I know for a fact the lens will not fully close on an R2a, without resulting in damage.
Although, I'm not sure if the RD-1 has the same shutter distance, as I have never seen one in real life? I have placed a black rubber gromit over the lens barrel to prevent the lens from fully closing.

Get an o-ring that fits the barrel of the 50 col summicron f/2 so that when you collapse it, it won't touch the shutter curtain in the back. Works great. Many different orings - some tighter, some looser - will work. I also use this technigue on my redscale elmar and old 2.8 50 elmar. The correct o ring will allow you to collapse the lense without thinking about whether it is going back too far.
 
Although I don't come close to qualifying as an experienced RD1 user, mine will be arriving this Monday or Tuesday. I emailed Stephen Gandy the same question about my old 50 mm collapsible Serenar, and he cautioned me against using it. He said it would damage the sensor if collapsed.
 
The R-D1 accepts more collapsible lens than many M bodies. My 90mm Elmar fully collapses(barely!) on the RD but not on the R3a. The many thing to look out for is interference with anything that swings out of the way when exposing like on the CL. Operate the camera with an open back at a slow shutter speed and look for problems. If you dont see a wildly swinging semaphore, give it a try.
But, I caution you, very very gently, a little at a time. If you feel anything, STOP. Touching the sides of the chamber is no big deal, but if you contact the shutter, or any other moving parts, you could seriously damage the camera.
This isnt really rocket science but enough people have screwed up their body to warn about being obvious to the dangers.

If you check the internal length of the colasped lens from the flange it should not exceed 20.5mm to be safe on the R-D1.

Yes and don't forget that the internal length of the flange is longer when the focus ring is adjusted to infinite.
I thought that my current Elmar 50/2.8 was OK for instance but i was wrong.
Set to infinite the flange touches the shutter blades, hence the shoelace above.
