Color film is back, says Ferrania

All my Ferrania stuff faded away, even the color neg stuff!
Lousy colors, grainy. Some was re=spooled out of date 3M.
Support Ilford.

Must admit I'd never even heard of Ferrania Solaris FG-100 Plus or Scotch Chrome 100. Sounds like they latched onto whatever patent was cheapest for them.
The only thing that could tempt me is the slower Kodak Royal Gold or maybe some Fuji 100/160 because I like print film for its latitude. I think digital does better than the fast press formulations like Fuji NPZ 800.
If they abandoned the orange mask it would encourage both home darkroom B&W printing and scanning.

On the other hand, and despite what nostalgic Italians might tell you, veteran photogs disliked the colours of the older Ferrania films (my dad being one of such photogs...). A friend of mine, however, had good results with their latest stuff (can't remember which film).

Actually, if Ferrania is able to make a stable emulsion with the color look that is *different* than Kodak or Fuji, I think today's photographer will actually buy them.

Because today's photographers are most likely digital shooters who wants to experiment with film. If they get something that looks no different than what they get with digital, why would they continue?

NOTE: My above comment applies only to 35mm only. I'd still welcome anyone who are able to produce 120 or 4x5 sheets.

I guess they´re making a good effort on this.

I looked in this thread there a few user not very happy with the quality, but hope ferrania will improve their products.

In this world no more industrial giants will ve interested in this market and for sure small companies will do but will have to deal with lack of expertise and means.

But meanwhile, keep buying Ilford, even if their color film is no good. 🙂

Since I'm getting better at writing in Italian these days, I sent an email to the general email address at Ferrania giving them a link to this page. I suggested they might read what people are writing here for more feedback.

They wrote me back about three hours later thanking me. They said they will monitor this thread and site, and they are monitoring several other sites for public reaction to the idea. They said the following in response to some of the negative comments about their film from the past (my translation):

"Here in particular they are correct in saying that the reversal film of the 1970's from 3M was anything but good. We're counting on doing much better with the new version of Chrome."

In their signature line, they mentioned that they have a Twitter account (@filmferrania) and a Facefook page (facebook.com/filmferrania), if you're that kind of person--which I am not.

By the way, I recently send a mail to Ilford if they were considering offering color film in the future, with Kodak and Fuji slowing signs of ramping down their product lines. I did not get a response... Still, it would be great, Ilford has proven they know how to survive in this shrinking market. Hope they read this thread too... You know, I actually buy their stuff and love it too.

Funny. Italy is going through what's probably the worst crisis of the last 50 years. Factories are shutting down sending unemployment to historical levels (I have relatives seriously running that risk right now). And then comes this good news, which is not only such for us film lovers, as you understand from my prologue. Best luck Ferrania. We'll do our best to help.

I hope ferrania makes the C-41 negative without the orange mask. That would simplify the scanning considerably.

Would it really (simplify scanning)?! Scanning would be just a tad faster and that's probably all. Scanning software could/would probably still make a mess when inverting the negative (yes, Vuescan, I'm looking at you!).

I have a scanner that has individual RGB channel gain controls and one can effectively remove the orange mask with setting a longer exposure of G and B channel. Resulting raw data from scanner is a negative without orange mask and yet Vuescan's inversion of that negative is nowhere near as good as that of ColorPerfect.

Now, I really want to go and buy some Rollei CN 200 just to scan a color negative film without an orange mask... 🙂

I don't think it would make too much difference, I've scanned lots of Kodak and Fujifilm negatives which have the orange base, and they always turn out OK.

My Ferrania stuff faded in less than 10 years.
Films done at same pro labs, Kodak,Fuji were perfect.
I'd rather have B/W than crappy color.
Even fresh the film results were awful.
Even East German film was better. Slightly..

I got a bunch of expired Ferrania 200 Solaris & it doesn't age well at all. Hit & miss. Expired Kodak & Fuji do much better. Ferrania should go into the B&W film business. I'm sure the rate Fuji is headed in the B&W film business they might get a great deal on machinery.😉
