Comfort Cameras

My used Canonet GIII QL-17. Something about the styling, the heft and the fact that somebody was taking photographs with it before I was the age my son is now is incredibly comforting.

Oddly enough, it is my newest camera, a D700, because I never have to worry about it not working, I never have to worry about how many shots I have left, and I never have to worry about having the right speed of film at the right time. I still love film, and plan on picking up an FG and an F5, but the greatest comfort is reliability and versatility.

Different combos for different things: Hexar RF and M-Hex 50/f2 for "just wandering" RF; OM-4T and lenses (28/f2.8; 50/f1.8 and Tamron 80-210 zoom) as my used-for-decades film SLR combo; Canon APS-C body (latest is 50D) and 100-400L zoom for digital/wildlife.

I use other things, some more frequently than the above (M3 and Elmar-M 50 just lately), but each of these "feels like home" in its appropriate situation.

M4-P .... It is a work-horse camera. Loaded with Tri-X and a 35mm Summilux pre-ASPH mounted, it is the combination I have used most often.

My Hexar RFs are almost even with my previous Minolta 9xi's as my longest-lived Main Axe cameras. As far as I'm concerned, they are my photographic "second skin" in terms of how easily I work with them.

Close on their heels is "my" (borrowed on long-term, hopefully to buy) Leica M2. This is not a knock on the M2, mind you, simply an acknowledgement that that the Hexen have run through a lot more film in my hands, and, in this case, familiarity breeds contentment, and then some. The M2 (along with the v1 35 f/2 Summi that came with it) brings simple and precise delights all its own, and I love it to pieces for that.

Finally, there's the Contax Tvs that I got from FrankS. I figured I'd like this camera a good deal, but it's become a lot bigger than that. It might be the best compact 35 I've used. Not the absolute best in all categories, but the gestalt of the thing (I know, I throw that damned word around a lot) is teriffic. It's almost always with me, with a roll of BW400NC in it. Enough said.

I love my Bessa R w/ J8. It might not be the most expensive, or even the sturdiest camera- but it has been a perfect companion since the day I got it. It's the camera that stole me away from DSLR's...
It travels with me everywhere...
And it's metered! 🙂

Despite it's evil SLRness, my Canon AE-1P. It was the first thing I bought with my first paycheck from my first part time job. Though I pretty much use my CL I still leave a roll of colour film in the Canon.

.... hmm .... just got out my Minolta SR7V - like an SRT but no so tall - similar size to my Kontaxes - with a built in CDs meter cell - freedom from te dreaded needle in the viewfinder ! Close second to the Contax ...

Difficult call - for years it would have been my Nikon F2, but now I have left the dark side behibd, it's a close run thing between my MP and IIIc K 🙄
