Hey friends, i'm shopping around for a compact 50mm for my new Leica CL and wanted your input as to a compact 50 (preferably no slower than 2.8). Originally i was planning on getting the 50 collapsible summicron, but it seems like people are on the fence about it potentially damaging the meter arm or not. It was recommended to use Dymo tape around the barrel so it doesn't collapse all the way in but that kinda defeats the purpose for me.
I was contemplating re-purchasing the CV 50mm collapsible heliar 50mm f2 that i had a while back, or possibly the CV 50mm color skopar f2.5. Do you guys have any other suggestions for a super short 50mm? Thanks!

Cron collapsible is not so compact with filter and hood.
Jupiter-3 is compact and very compact lens for its aperture size. But hood is needed.
Summarit-M 50 2.5 is compact, if no hood. It is better in terms of no hood lens comparing to collapsible Cron.

For a modern, rigid lens it's down to the CV Color-Skopar 50/2.5 and the Summarit-M 50/2.5. Both excellent, the Summarit being more expensive, a tad shorter and IMO, marginally better optically.

Then, just get what CL was meant to be with. Rokkor 40/2. It is really small, but no compromises lens. I just sold one, because I have no CL.

I have the Skopar and really like it.
Chose it over the latest Summicron and Planar for its form and image character..... love the small size and focus tab!
If you have the “new” Summarit, you’re set!
It’s a beautiful little lens.
The only reason to change to Skopar would be to claim the few bucks price difference... probably not worth the bother as the Skopar is going up$.

Yes, all 40mm cl versions are worth a try.
I had the CLE for a lonv time and it was a tough choice to let it go.
On an m5, a 50mm made more sense. If I had a cl or Bessa r3 ... the 40cle would still be here

Maybe OP will take it easy after watching of HCB in Budapest video. He used CL for outdoors and not so tiny 50mm lens, plus external VF on it. Where are pictures taken with this combo as well.

I think you mean the Summicron-C, perhaps?

Perhaps? If OP wants to pay next to twice just for label, and weird filters, then Summicron-C.

I have to agree, if you can live w/ a 40 instead of a 50, the 40 Rokkor is an outstanding lens. I always shot Summars and collapsible Summicrons on my CL though and just never collapsed them, but the one time I ran some film in it w/ the Rokkor 40 I was very pleased. The photos had an old world, Leica look to them for sure.

Hey all, so i do also have the 40mm m-rokkor which lives on my CLE hehe (fantastic lens btw). But i was specifically looking for a super compact 50mm setup. Here's a photo i took of my CL with the 50mm summarit and a vc hot shoe meter (I noticed the meter on my CL is a bit all over the place, maybe its the battery?)

Hi,
We are talking second-hand lenses and there's no set price for them. I've bought good lenses for pennies and given them away to other RFF members. So I reckon you can get anything you want with a bit of patience and thought (and deep pockets for the odd dud's repair).
BTW, I've owned and used both the Leica and Minolta 40mm, when they were new and can't see any difference between them. So why not get the right lens for the body?

Hi,
The mechanical links involved in the meter arm are probably the cause. Luckily CL's don't cost the earth to get serviced and for a camera that's coming up to 45 years old they still perform as we would wish and a lot better than many...

I never get good lenses for low price. Normally people are aware of the going price before putting lens on sale. If not, I don't feel good about benefiting on it. All cheap old Leitz lenses I've got from local store were in need of CLA. I paid for what I was getting.
What is wrong with Minolta on CL? RF cam?

Not really smaller and better... you have the right lens... Summarit 50mm 2.4 or 2.5 is perfect for the CL.

Hi,
I don't think it's wrong but I don't like orphan bodies and orphan lenses. They should be kept together, imo.
