Comparing 35mm Lenses: Would you be interested?

Raid, you're #1.This test was allota work, and is truly appreciated by all who have followed along with you.Thanks.........Robin

I couldn't resist doing more field testing today.
I tried out the Nikkors for a change.

I took two rolls of film, and I used:

Nikkor 35mm/3.5 in LTM

Nikkor 35mm/2.5 in Contax mount

Nikkor 35mm/1.8 in Contax mount

Raid, your test confirms the opinion that I have of the Canon 35/1.5- it is very flare-prone. Also, I am surprised that the Canon 35/1.8 is not much different.

WOW! My eyes hurt!

Now, the Canon 35mm/1.5 does not shine as a star anymore, does it. The newer lenses seem to have better coating that allows them to resist the intense glare from the bare bulb.

Thanks for this image portion in particular.

Something wrong with that lens, I agree with Edward. Focus is off in your
photos ... I used to have it, too and it did behave very similar to my 35/2 v3.

Nothing you can do about it though, Raid.

Roland.

Looks like I need to send this lens off to Don Goldberg to be cleaned and collimated. Having used it a fair amount, I think that it performs better in a screw mount body than what Raid's test shows.

Raid, outstanding test! Thanks to Roland and others for the analyses, too

Hi Mark,
I followed up to my initial testing of your Canon 35mm/2 by shooting an entire roll of film with the lens mounted on a screwmount Canon P that I fully trust. The shots that were taken wide open were focused beyond the subject the lens was supposed to focus on. The shots at smaller apertures look fine though.

Greetings,

Raid

Mark,

The Canon 35mm/1.8 may need a cleaning job one day soon. I may send it along with the Summaron 35/3.5.

Raid and Roland, please let me add my thank you to the list. This lens testing and analysis was indeed a major project that will potentially benefit many people. I, for one, very much appreciate the time and effort you have put into this. I enjoyed reading about your testing process Raid - quite a trick keeping the lenses/related photos straight. And Roland, I look forward to your findings with these lenses.

Here are some images from the test roll of Fuji NPS with the Canon 35mm/1.5. Most if not all were taken at 1.5. Location was Seville Square in the historical district of Pensacola. Dana and Lina were trying out their new bikes.

This is Dana with her new bike:

This is my wife [who chose the two bikes]:

This is Professor James Marsh (Physics) who walked into my testing range:

Overall, I am very impressed by the beautiful face rendition given by the Canon 35/1.5 with Fuji NPS at ASA 120 and the lens shot wide open.

Raid

Raid,

It's probably my favorite lens. I am glad that you can share it's performance with others

Thank you, Roger.
I think that I did well to think of teaming up with Roland to get a more comprehensive look at the performance of the lenses. Team work is always a good idea.

Hi Matt,

Can you tell me more [via a pm maybe] about your Astro Berlin 25mm/2 lens? It looks like a project lens.

Trittium, you must really like this lens a lot, as judged by the 88 photos that you have posted on Flickr. There are some great images in the Flickr post- I especially like the B & W photos.

I will have to practice with my lens after I get it back. I had it for only a week before shipping off to Raid for the test, and shot only only roll of film with it, mostly wide open in bright sun, as a sort of acid test. Glad to see that the lens behaves well otherwise, as judged from your photos

Mark,
I learn a lot from using all the test lenses. I also am looking forward to using my own lenses again. The Canon 35mm/1.5 was totally unknown to me before you sent me such a lens for the test.

I need the mailing addresses of some of the individuals who mailed me their lenses, plus the insuarnce amounts they want me to place.

Some of you sent me detailed instructions in wiriting, such as Mark, and I have kept all those instructions.

Please send me a pm with current mailing address and insurance amount requested.

Thanks.

Thanks for checking out my flickr. You won't be disappointed with the performance, trust me. I hope you enjoy it for a long time.

One of these days I will get a clean Canon 35mm/1.5. It seems to be great for creamy portaits.

Roland: Since we are talking about "signature" of lenses, I need your input in a thread I started last night about a possible Sonnar look.

I did post, Raid, but we posted in parallel so I think you didn't notice ...

Roland.
