I am considering a purchase of Nikon flash SB-600. Can someone tell me if it is compatible with the r-d1? If you are using it, are you happy with it? Please share your experience.

It works, but not as well as an "older" Nikon flash. It's too hard to change settings on the SB600 to be useful on the RD1. I've have both the SB600 and the older 28. The 28 is much more user friendly on the RD1. The 600 is great on late model Nikons that can communicate with it, but isn't that great on a fully manual camera like the Epson.

Thanks Michael. That is what my concern was. Does the 600 allow for aperture and speed setting at least?

if you haven't seen the discussion of trigger voltages- how some older flash units have a stronger trigger voltage than 6 volts...and the rd1 manual recommends 6 volts maximum, you might want to research your flash unit's voltage. not everything is listed on this page.
i wrote to leica and the response for the sf20 and sf24 are both less than 6 volts.

I've not found a way to set the aperture or speed on the 600. In "M" you can set the intensity of the flash. With my 28 I can have the flash dialed in with just a few test shots.

the SB600 just as the SB23 or SB400 is not the flash to use for non-Nikon cameras, really. Use something like a SB20, SB22, SB24/5/6/7/8/80. A SB22(s) is dirt cheap, uses AA batteries and gives to auto apertures. The form factor is OK. The SB27 is still my favourite, as it offers more auto aperture settings. I'm using the SB22/4/7 with different non-Nikon cameras with absolutely no problem.

I can also recommend the Nikon SB-27. I used it on my R-D1 (now sold, will be selling the flash once i get around to it...), voltage is safe, and it is small enough to balance well on the camera. I pretty much used it at 1/16 power as a fill/balance light for ambient, and it worked perfectly. The pull-out bouncer is a reputed to be flimsy, but I found it fine.

One flash that does not work for my R-d1 is the Sunpak Pf20xd. It's tiny, with manual output controls so I thought it would be perfect. Instead, it won't fire at all on the R-D1. It shoots fine on a Nikon D1 and even an old N2002, but is a doornail on the R-D1. That camera will happily fire my Sunpak 383 and my Nikon SB24, so it's not a camera malfunction. I had hoped to get something smaller as a walkaround flash, but I guess that's not the one. Weird.

I'm quite happy with the defunct Contax TLA200. It works fine with the R-D1.
Sits nicely on the camera and there's a zoom head on the flash for wide to tele settings. I use it only in the full manual mode.

Just found a new-in-the-box SB30 at a Ritz Camera while looking for something else ... it's dinky and it wasn't drastically more than a good used one from KEH+shipping, so now it's mine.

I found an Olympus S20 for about NZD$10 on the local Ebay equivalent, works fine - I did test the trigger voltage as well before I put it on the camera. All good there. I'll have to try the SB30 on my R-D1. I sometimes use a Leica SF20 but it will cut off and you have to turn it back on again as the R-D1 will not keep it "on" like a M6/M7 will. With wedding work, I'll use Pocketwizards to trigger Nikon SB900's for lighting.
