Condition of Epson-site refurb units, recently received?

Mine should be delivered tomorrow and I'll report back on any problems. I'd also like to hear from others about the refurb quality.
The refurb R-D1 (serial # 0045xx) arrived on time. Cosmetically perfect - mint condition. RF appears to be aligned properly, sensor spotless, etc. I'm very pleased so far with this copy. Only problem is that the battery does not click positively into place in the battery compartment, but otherwise works fine. I upgraded firmware to 2.0. Casual snapshots around house and outside look good. I'll give it a workout tomorrow with different lenses and see how it performs.

well

well

I haven't needed it, and I like options, once you "upgrade" you can't go back to the original fw that is so far working well for me.

Upgrading is easy and beneficial. Why would you avoid it?

I hear you. I was thinking the same thing when the firmware update was released. But I wa soon persuaded by the reports from, amongst others, JLW. The firmware gave a few benefits that I liked over the old situation, like no longer having to double press the shutter and the hot pixel mapping. I was a bit doubtful still when I performed the update but when I had a chance to shoot with it for some time, I was convinced I had made the right choice.

what do you mean double press the shutter? In what situations? I'm aware of the hot pixel mapping feature, but haven't found any release notes on the "s" upgrade for all the fixes/features. Thanks.

What I would like is firmware that cocked the silly fake shutter/advance for me... ;)

ampguy: I think the shutter double press refers to getting the camera out of sleep mode in the earlier firmware version.

I went out and took a few test shots with the R-D1 refurb using my 28mm and 40mm lenses. Bad lighting, but otherwise OK. Infinity focus needs adjustment, but I think I can get by for awhile before I send it to DAG for adjustment.

Just got my refurb R-D1. Everything looks good except that the shutter doesn't appear to be completely flat. There appears to be one blade that is not uniform like the rest. Is this normal?

Can someone post a picture of their R-D1 shutter. Thanks.

i have got my R-D1s today, its firmware version 1.0, but it contains all the upgrades (eg adobe RGB etc)

can anyone confirm R-D1s' version 1 is in fact the upgrade version 2 firmware?

mine came with firmware version 1.0. Under LCD brightness, I did not see a version number being reported. After the upgrade, the LCD brightness dialog will report:

R-D1 Ver. 2.0.

it is worth it to upgrade.

mine is R-D1s, made in August 2006, the version number under LCD brightness says "version 1.0", but I tried to upgrade to version 2, the upgrade is not successful, it gives a "003" error, ie wrong firmware downloaded.

any R-D1s owner here?

If your R-D1 (or R-D1s) has the following functions (list taken from the firmware update installation guide) than it's running on firmware level 2.0 (which is named level 1.0 on the R-D1s):

Pictures displayed on the LCD can be viewed at a greater magnification rate: Jpeg from x10 to x16 and RAW from x2 to x16.
• The Epson R-D1 ‘default film’ can be set to 1, 2 or 3. Value 1 is ‘Portrait’ mode. Value 2 is for ‘Landscape’ shooting and value 3 is a ‘night-view’ set-up. Please note, your original film set-up values will be kept after the firmware upgrade. The new default values will only be set after you perform the photography setting initialization.
• When shooting in Jpeg mode you can now select the colour space ‘Adobe RGB’.
• The new “RAW + JPEG” shooting mode simultaneously records the shot in two different files (Jpeg (H) and RAW) under the same file number.
• The “quick view” function allows the picture to be displayed on the LCD immediately after the shot is taken.
• The noise reduction for long exposure times reduces noise, after the shutter has been closed. On the Epson R-D1, the strong noise reduction set-up of the film could be only operated for an exposure time above 2 seconds.
• A new ‘CCD pixel defect correction’ function can be performed from the user menu.
• Compatibility with Print Image Matching 3.
• The shutter remains usable even if the Epson R-D1 is set to playback mode.
• The auto white balance has been modified. The colour balance adjustment for incandescent light has been improved.
• Reduction of noise for shots with the ISO 1600 set-up.
• The ‘multi-shot’ function has been improved by increased the number of successive shots from 2 to 3.

Like others. mine appeared brand new, with promo material that was out of date for 1 year (they offered a free case to early buyers it appears). It has worked flawlessly. It's pretty clear these "refurbs" are mostly unsold new stock. Great deal, better camera!....Peter

thanks guys, I think my R-D1s is running version 2, judging from the above feature list, although it says "version 1".

thanks again to ErikFive, mine has 20060803 written on baseplate, which I guess is made on 3rd August 2006?

I now have Nokton 35/1.2 mounted on it, making it my "Noctilux".:p

"Version 1" of the R-D1s is "Version 2" already. "Version 2" is only for the R-D1.

You already have Adobe RGB, instant review, etc etc.

I didn't know epson sold refurb r-d1s units.... thought only r-1d.

The US Epson store re-furbs are R-D1s (plural not S). Given that the only difference is the firmware (easily upgraded by the user) and the screened Letter S on the front, it really shouldn't make any difference.

Mine makes a noise when tilted like there is something loose and rattling in the area of the viewfinder. Anyone else? Is that normal? Or do I have a screw loose
