First, thanks to everyone for contributing to this wonder rangefinder resource. You’re GREAT!

I’m interesting in using my M4-2 for IR landscapes and need a R72 filter.

My equipment is a Canadian black M4-2 (#15319xx) and a black Summilux 35mm f1.4 (#29921xx), 35mm engraved on the barrel, both circa 1980.

I do not have a lens hood for the Lux. The lens has no filter threads but has a ‘channel’ (“retaining ring”?) around the forward outer area of the barrel.

Searching through the posts here, it appears that I need the two-part lens hood (#12504) that accepts a drop in Series VII filter. I also see that a thin 49mm filter can be substituted if a Series VII cannot be found.

Does this all sound right?

Thanks for confirming or correcting my thinking here.

Yes, Hood #12504 is the correct one for the older 35mm Lux. Just measured the groove in mine and it's 51mm inside diameter. If you don't tighten it all the way it should handle a filter 5.5 mm thick. Tightened all the way the gap is 4.5 mm.

The series 7 Leitz filters I use measure 50.5 mm o.d. and 5.3 mm thick.

If you are referring to the pre asph Lux 35, the hood on mine is a two part one (12504) taking series filters. The hood clips onto the channel you were referring to. I have used regular 49mm filters in the hood after making them thinner by honing them down on the threaded side to a thickness that fits the hood. It all sounds right to me.
