Considering my first Leica M body (film)

Do the top covers to the wind lever just unthread for the replacement or do you need a special tool?
ChuckR... i've never done it, but this is interesting info.... the M2/3 lever is a different length than the one for the MP...

Most Leica M newbies buying their first M don't realize that first M will likely be the first of many.
Over time you will have different M preferences.
So don't take the first one so seriously.

You might keep it, but most M's have a way of moving on.
Leica M ownership is a moving door with a moving bottomless camera bag.

Have fun and Njoy the journey.
Try to start owning an old meterless M 😎😎😎

Articulated film advance.....what you call "PITA plastic on shutter lever"
I'm having more than a little difficulty understanding what you've written.
"Did you teardown an M? I do" ..... excellent.
By the way who is "Moogie"
This is usually a forum for discussion not arguments.
We all have differing opinions based on our individual experience with cameras.
I'll leave this discussion on that note.
Im sorry if you feel that way, I am not arguing, just stating the facts.

We can not please everybody when it comes to an opinion.

Disagreeing without attacking persons is not an argument.

I do not comform or buy into it easily especially if it is just a hearsays. I look into facts.

Dont take it personally.

You called Leica M2 as “redheaded stepchild”” WHY?

I wanna reiterate that all leica M’s series in terms of principles, design and functionality serves the same purpose. They’d just sone few perks but not much on later design (e.g. Speedloading, lightmeter, speed rewind etc. other than that thats it.

Yeah I did disassemble my own M, and franken-design it. It is not easy, So I take my time because, I love doing it intuitively.

Besides having a meter-less M series make yourself more attentive reading the light.

The guy who I am talking to is one of the old-timer here. His name is “Moggie77”

Have a nice day!

Cheers!

You are absolutely right. I know for a fact this MP will not be my last Leica (film or digital).

... When the M6 arrived (80's?) I rushed out an bought one. Like my M4-2 the VF flared badly ...

VF patch flare .. from the second run of the M4-2 and all later bodies up until the early 2000s, Leica was getting comments that people wanted thicker, brighter frame lines and they made a change to achieve that. It also caused a lot of viewfinder flare.

Early M4-2 VF optics are identical to the M4: no flare. They finally created an optical fix for the flare issue in the late model cameras, and the fix can be applied back through the line.

We all have our likes and dislikes. My M4-2 needs a shutter overhaul but is otherwise perfect. My M6TTL 0.85x is perfect. It took me 50-some years to move through the M bodies I've had, and I'm happy with these two film bodies, and the M10-M/-R that I use alongside them. I'm also happy with my Leica IIIc as well, a nice replacement for the IIIf, IIc, and IIf I had all those years ago. Never had an M7, never owned an M5 or an M2, or an MP.

Hmm ... M3, M4, M-P (2x), M6TTL 0.72x, M4-2, M6TTL 0.85x ... seven M film bodies over 55 years. Three CLs too. An M9, an M-P240, an M-D262, and then the current M10-M, M10-R, and my second X2. An SL601. Prior to all of those, a IIIf, a IIf and a IIc. I've certainly given Leica a good bit of my spare change, eh? LOL!

I'm pretty happy with what I have now, just need to use it more. 😀

I did not call the M2 anything.... this is what i said: "
I have a great appreciation for the M2...it was the first Leica i bought, but the M4 is not the red-haired stepchild by any stretch of the imagination. Mine is still going strong since 1968.
You're the one who stated strong objection to the two piece wind lever. "with a PITA plastic on shutter lever that keep on losing while on the fly,"
You're the one who newly shows up here and states strong personal opinions as if they are facts...
As well you might consider that repainting an original black paint Leica does nothing but decrease the value.
Have a nice day

38deardorf....I am so glad you know not to repaint your original black paint M4!!
BTW, it's beautiful. Wish I had one too but I'm probably done spending that kind of money on film (or even digital) cameras. My wife would probably kill me too 😮

Reading through this thread, methinks some of the newcomers need to read the room and chill. This is, in general, a pretty well-behaved corner of the 'net. If you feel like your honor has been impugned, or if you feel the urge to impugn the honor of another, take a deep breath and go for a walk around the block. These are just cameras, after all. Keep the nasty to yourselves. There are no battles to be won, no points to score worth scoring. And, speaking personally, there is no joy to be had for anyone -- including the onlookers -- from the behavior above.

Leica makes very nice cameras and if I were to buy another Leica M it would probably be the M6, but I also have a lot of love for the M-A and may actually have exposed more film in that wonderful Type 127 that I bought new in 2014 from the San Francisco store. But I have been using the ZI for many years (since 2010) and I finally sold my M-A in 2023 because I only used it once in an entire year. That ZI viewfinder is so addictive it is hard to leave it alone.

I never tried that one. I just never felt I needed anything with the ZI. I have used it for so long now it is kind of like going back home again when I pick it up and look through that viewfinder. Funny how you can get so attached to little things like that.

I did try the 1.25x Leica one on the M-A but I didn't take to it very well. I am not even certain where it is anymore. Its' probably in a drawer somewhere like a lot of filters I've bought and then forgotten about.
