Contax G1 - new purchase & question re AF

Hi there, couldnt resist an *bay bargain G1 with 45mm lens, hood, filter etc as have always been impressed by the look and have never really solved the lightweight walkaround quality camera dilemma (have had several Leicas). I have read a lot re the noisy AF (and it is !) but its much much noisier and of a different tone when the camera is held in the vertical position vs horizontal. Is this normal for a G1 ? Camera and lens is mint so I dont suspect damage of any sort.

I'll try both vertical positions with my g1 and 28mm and report tomorrow.

Dont think there is a difference but the G is a relevation in many ways...

My G1 has this, too. My G2 is much quieter and it doesn't change with orientation.

Interesting.... I believe mine whirls and groans the same no matter which way I'm holding it. Great camera, by the way. If you can get used to the autofocus... The lenses cannot be matched in 35mm format.

My G1 abused physcialy a bit but not used for photo much, has slight difference in the hor and each of the vert, viewfinder up it is slightly louder, hor quiet, viewfinder down in between.

There you go...

Thanks for the replies. I am a happy camper - its a great camera and probably the nicest in the hand of all the cameras I have used. Why do folk abuse it so much ? Rhetorical question - my gain ! Great lens - is there an equivalent of NAS for Contax G....

The lenses are available for good prices on either ebay or at used dealers like ffordes, mxv or mifsuds...the flash units are great...only thing worth taking care over are the hoods - some of the prices are plain stupid! Shop around...
