What are the advantages of the G2 over the G1, given the G1 is cheaper - any major disadvantages compared to the G2? (assuming G1 is Green Label)

Mike - i have the G2 as one came up here . then 5 lenses followed on the auction site. such good value.
Some love the G1 for its smaller size. others feel the G2 is the way to go with better focussing accuracy with the 90mm - some haven't had that issue. Several threads to be found here on the topic
G1 would have to be a great bargain - maybe start there and then if you decide to go G2 you have a body to put a second lens on - not a big investment when you consider the quality of the glass...

The G2 has better AF, the MF is simpler (but MF on the G's is pretty useless to me), and the layout is much better for this user. I had the G1, but sold it. Came back for the lenses, and the G2 works for me.
The focus wheel on the G1 was in a bad place for me- I often knocked the thing into MF mode without intending to. You'll hear that this is impossible, but it happened to me often.

I have had both a G1 and a G2 for some 6-7 years. I eventually ended up using the G1 about 10X the time I used the G2. It is just a bit smaller, a bit lighter and does everything the G2 does that I actually need.
Unlike Sepia, I found the G1 auto focuses just as well as the G2. And if the manual focus knob on the G1 rotates too freely, it is a simple adjustment by any competent camera repair tech.

I did find the G1 'hunted' quite a bit more- even with the 45.
As well, isn't the G2 a bit quieter? Never had the two side by side.

The layout of the controls on the G2 is a little more comfortable for me, having the thumb button for AF makes a much bigger difference in how much control I feel I have than I expected. And it does focus better at night/in the dark than the G1 seems too.
The G1 I tend to use a bit more like a point-and-shoot, and not shoot quite as deliberately as I do w/ the G2. It definitely has it's place in my kit though, and if i'm going out w/ both cameras, the 21mm usually lives on the G1, using the external v/f negates any issues w/ the slightly smaller v/f of the G1 vs G2.
