Contax V Leica M6

I was using my G2 over Christmas shooting two films. While the viewfinder is small, what I see is what I get and the shooting is very quick. I like the camera very much.

I brought my M6 out yesterday and while the viewfinder is large I find it confusing when using a 90mm lens.

If I used the Leica constantly I probably prefer it to the Contax.

I think whatever camera I use steadily I would get so used to it that I would then start to find faults with my other cameras.

It's nice having a choice.

Robert,
It is nice having a choice & eventually, I think it comes down to preference. I was pretty close to having a G2 (bought it, but it never came - scammed!) & the features that follows are the ones I particularly liked: 1) higher shutter speed 2)cheaper, but wonderful glass 3)good AF if properly used. The small mag finder didn't bother me as much as I thought it would...
However, I bought an m6 & what I love most is it's manual everything + the larger, brighter finder & the fact that you can see outside the framelines... Looking back I'm glad I bought the Leica.
In the end, and this is my personal opinion only, it doesn't matter what camera you use. There are plenty of photos from camera phones that I've enjoyed....
Cheers, j

Which particular camera, is important only to the photographer. The images are most important to the viewers.

There is no doubt, the end result is the photos regardless of what has been used to produce them.

Yes, but for the amature photographer who engages in this hobby for pleasure, the process is also important, and in that process, the camera gear is a large factor.

IMHO wherever Leica turned right Contax turned left. So the Contax G and the Leica M systems are very different from each other except the benefits of the mirrorless design which leads to a small camera/lens combination.

If you get used to the Contax finder and AF it is a wonderfull camera as is the Leica if you get used to the finder and lack of AF :)

One finder is made for one focal lenght less suited to longer lenses, the longer the lesser, and the other makes a compromise for every focal length. One is cluttered with framelines the other has a moving mask. One shows roughly 95% of whats in the frame at every distance and focal lenght, the other has framelines which are 100% acurate at one distance for the focal lenght but are wrong for any other distance.

1/1000th may be to slow for bright lights, i.E. a carribean beach at noon with ISO100 slides, 1/50th flash sync might be far too slow for fill flash.
An electronic shutter let's you down if you forgot to bring spare batteries with your spare film and it might malfunction in very cold environments.

A full mechanical system needs service to stay accurate where the electronic system may not be serviceable when it fails.

A metal shutter and motordrive is louder than a cloth shutter and manual film advance, on the other hand motordrive and metal shutter can give you 4 frames per second if needed.

Best solution is having both! I'm too poor for a Leica, so I stick with my G1 and G2 for the time beeing.
