Mike (mtokue) has graciously agreed to donate his three extra batteries to a contest here. I propose three contests. One, the person who comes up with the best tip for how to use the R-D1. Second, the best candid moment photo since rangefinders are all about people and candid moments. Third, the best general photo.
Let me know what you think about the above. All entries will be judged by the people of this forum. I will set up a gallery page with voting for the second and third contests. For the first contest I will put the entries in a thread. After one week's time the voting will start and will last for one week.
I will start the contest on Wednesday night if there are no objections.
If this works out we can try out more contests although I do not know if we can keep the prizes coming.
Thanks,
Chris

Yes indeed as Chris has stated above, I have Three batteries here up for grabs.
Just for the record, I have attached Photo of the batteries below.
No, there is no catch, I am doing this out of my own free will
Through the suppliers that I have for my IT/IS buisness, I had recieved these
and a few other "Gifts", I know I could sell them but I just figured that this
was such a good place and that, well, I just figured it was a good thing to do!
And might help draw a few more RD-1 users to join us here, More users, more information , and better for us all!
So get your thinking caps on and get snapping!
The only one point I would like to add, Photographs to have been taken on a RD-1!!
Although I don't see that the batteries would be much use to a non RD-1 user!
Mike.

I would like to see one pic / entry per contest per person. I plan to hold more contests in the future so do not worry.
Cheers,

Chris,
What about voting?
Only one vote per contest per person and you can't vote for yourself (as it will all cancel out)?

Jim,
There will be only one vote allowed per member. I am assuming that we are all big boys and girls in that we would vote not for ourselves but for the best entry that is not ours.
Cheers,
Chris

I dont really like the idea of a phot contest. From what I have seen they have started uncivil threads on other sites. I know you guys wont go there but I just want to keep it clean.
I think if you want to have your photo contest maybe you could do it this way.
I created a usr called "RFF Bogus User" upload your picture as that user into that users gallery. Do not let your identity be know until the voting is over.
If this is too much trouble then procede at your own risk
I will give driggett the password so he can pm it to those wanting to participate.
I think that eventually I will turn on the rating in the gallery so this kind of thing can happen more regularly. But last time I tried, the user overwhelmingly rejected the rating option. Maybe its time for a new poll.

At the risk of inciting the wrath of the community here, a tongue in cheek suggestion... why not have a gallery where we can put our fave pic (just one each), and donate the batteries to Sean for his sterling work in promoting the R-D1 and his lens tests?

Phil,
I personaly do not have a problem with that, My wish was to try and get more users online in this forum, so that we can amass a greater knowledge base that would be of use to all.
I am sure that there are others that use these cameras and have experiences/workarounds.
I think that what is here already is a great feat, Just trying to see whether we could possibly somhow make it that little bit better
.
(not to imply that the forum is lacking anything inparticular

this forum is already becoming known as the place to go for info.
competition is something i have tried very hard to stay away from. comradeship not competition, that is the key.
deciding on the 'best' in a photo is too personal not to cause hard feelings.
i'm with jorge, keep it friendly folks.

Mike, Joe, I completely agree - this forum is part of the 'added value' you get with the R-D1 that makes it worth the price
Looking at some other sites where people grade pictures, you can see that it's very hard to judge another photographer's work - apart from the problems of viewing in low-res, a lot of great pix (think Steichen for example) would just be written off as 'too dark' etc.
There are forums out there where people go for crits; so far this one has been quite different in that it's more of a support group. Yippee!

Well this was my entry for candid moment! Fresh RAW conversion, its a babushka from Donetsk, easter ukraine.
I've just completed a project on Chernobyl "liquidators" in Ukraine and I used the
RD-1 almost exclusively for the whole project. For those interested I could post a url with the results as soon as i've finished processing!
The RD-1 is the best right now.

I agree with the possible danger lurking in a photo contest but I like Chris and Mike's suggestion of forming a repository of tips and tricks. I think we already have a big load of these. The point would be to have them listed in an easy to read form, like in a FAQ, instead of having to look for them in the different threads.
So, maybe the person who can make a sensible start with this FAQ could be rewarded with a spare battery?

Did you happen to come across any museum or exhibition in memory of Yevgeny Khaldei, who was born in Donetsk?
There is a wonderful exhibition on display right now in the Joods Historisch Museum (Jewish Historical Museum) (http://www.jhm.nl/tentoonstellingen.aspx?id=114) here in Amsterdam. They're also showing a Belgian documentary on Khaldei titled "Yevgeny Khaldei, photographer under Stalin" with an up-close and very personal interview with the man himself. This documentary was completed in 1997, IIRC months before he passed away. Very interesting.

No, sadly I didn't have much free time to go to any exhibition but I will check in july on my return. Interesting to check out though. If I do find something of interest I'll buzz you!

Since the majority of the people do not like a photo contest then I will cancel the contest and just start a FAQ thread which I will moderate to include the FAQs of this list. How about I extract the users that have contributed to this forum and randomly pick three names with Sean's name being one of them for his hard work in the R-D1 area. If I hear no objections by Saturday morning PST then I will go ahead with it.
I would like us all to start contributing a photo a week to the R-D1 gallery. I think we can learn a lot from each other's work. It would also be helpful if the submitter can list the steps taken to get that photo both on the camera side and the computer side.
Thanks,
Chris

Chris - excellent idea about the gallery. One question- is it possible in any way to index submitted photos, by technique or lens perhaps, so that people could use it as a resource, in the way a FAQ is used? In that way, we could build up a library of samples to complement Sean's reviews and other contributions.

Chris , Phil, great Ideas.. Perhaps the use of Albums for different lens/subject/method etc.
Would it be possible to have some normal web pages as a FAQ/Workround guide
rather than these Forum pages?
and as we seem to be losing the comp idea .... I would place a vote for Sean (Although I'm not sure ANOTHER battery is what Sean would necessarily need/want currently.
I would also like to put Chris up for consideration for one of the Batts
,
I would even suggest Joe but I think it wont fit in a "P"
Mike.
