New here, but from my browsing it looks like an awesome site.

I am hoping the resident Genius will come out of the woodwork to resolve some strange happenings with a CoolScan LS-2000.

:bang:

The Problem: After installation (which was error free) I can scan single slides or film, no problem. When I install the LS-20 Slide Feeder, the trouble begins. After some slides have been scanned, always after the Auto Focus and exposure steps, the system stops and gives me a Microsoft error. It usually happens around the 4th or 5th slide, but may make it to the 40th slide. No real consistency. It is making me nuts.

Having worked with Nikon, it appears the error is Microsoft generated. After hours with Microsoft Support for hours; other than determining that they know probably less than my mom about scanners. . . . we still have the problem.

Background on Test: This is what I have done to date.

Tried the unit on 4 Different machines with XP Pro.
1 Machine with XP Home.

XP Pro Machines are all at SP3 except 1 that was reloaded from scratch at Microsofts request and moved to SP2 before loading.

I have moved 2 scanners, same problems. .. .

Anybody than can help will have my nomination for SCANNER GOD!

Thanks

Use Vuescan instead of the Nikon software.

There's also the possibility of a hardware error. Have you updated the firmware on the LS2000?

You're probably no match for troubleshooting this. The LS2000 is also comparatively ancient.

Many thanks for the swift reply.

I am heading to the site now. I realize the scanner is ancient, but I need to make it work. They have 3 in there arsenal. From what I have read, it is a good scanner. It was a little hinky when it came out, but is supposed to be far better with v2.5 and 3.1 NikonScan.

I will find Vuescan. I would guess this works with Multi Slide Feeders???

I tend to specialize in working with older gear, if I can't get this one sorted out, it will be a first. With enough research I can find a band-aid hopefully.

Open to any more suggestions. . . will repost in a few hours after I upgrade the firmware and try Vuescan.

Thanks again

If you are running Windows XP Service Pack 2 or later and the Nikon software for the LS2000, then you've done something that is generally not possible. The NikonScan software will only work with Windows 98, ME, NT 4, 2000, and XP up to SP1. After that you need VueScan.

I have a LS30 (the main difference is its 8bit per colour channel vs. 14bit channel of LS2000) and it works on XP with Service Pack 2 and 3, and Vista with VueScan fine.

Also make sure your SCSI card and ASPI layer is as up to date as possible as this can cause communication errors.

As much as I don't want to say it but Nikon's original software was pretty awful and the errors you've experienced are indicative of that.

Sorry I can't be conclusive.

Also, is the SCSI chain terminated? That is quite important.

Can you make Vuescan work with the slide feeder SF-200??? I touched on it a bit, but did not see a way. Will have to look into it more.

I can scan 5 to 40 slides then get the error. Must have done some magic some how. All single slides work perfect.

Maybe I need to call Vuescan for some knowhow.

Thanks

As I write, I'm using Vuescan and a LS-2000 on Vista. Works fine and there is infared clean and grain reduction. Don't know about the slide feeder though.
