In most countries (almost all, I would think), you automatically own the copyright to your work, be it photos, art, writing, etc. unless you choose to relinquish it.

I have used the US copyright ECO system to register images. It's really pretty easy and you can register one or many for a single fee. Once I receive the registration number, I embed that in the metadata of my images.
Last time I did it the fee was about $43.00, but I think it has gone up recently.
