I truly sympathize with those who have been confined and isolated in large urban centers around the world. I lived most of my life in a big city and understand how frustrating it can be cooped up inside. Now, I live in a place where social distancing is more or less my normal day. Being outside, taking photos and seeing almost no one is easy. I hope this photo makes you smile. Stay safe; be kind.

In some cultures social distancing is quite a natural thing, less effort required to keep the distance...

I live in on the NC coast, people here don't seem to panic until the day before a CAT 4 is due to make landfall. Wife and I were gone (in same state) and grocery shopping when we got back (last Sunday). Toilet paper and soup were the only shelves empty. Being old we stocked up (typically only buy day or two).

Have to say, still can't understand all the government induced panic. So far deaths haven't reached the flu level, let alone death by everything else. Old people die from a variety of issues, all related by old age. The wife and I are old, Everyone wants to go to heaven, just don't want to go now.

IMO there is ample reason for concern. This is not the flu, and not similar to the flu as we might have hoped. It's asymptomatic; that is, it's highly contagious even before any symptoms appear. It's sneaky and deadly. Especially for us older folks. And there's not yet a cure.

The economic consequences of dealing with it to minimize fatalities is another kind of illness, piling on. Many people are taking a big hit to their wallets as the effects cascade through the economy. I hadn't anticipated this, and it has become clear that it will hurt me seriously even if I don't catch the virus itself.

Oh, this is real. The government and the news haven't helped by being slow to act seriously and hyping fear and sensationalism, respectively. But the disease and the threat is quite real, and will have huge consequences for everyone. I refuse to succumb to panic and fear, and I follow the ordinances in the hope that it will help.

Whether what has been done so far is the right thing, whether it's making any dent in the crisis, whether it's enough ... There are varying opinions and I'm not an expert: I'll not add my personal conjecture.

It is permissible by the local ordinances, and encouraged, to go outdoors for exercise as long as you abide by the Social Distancing guidelines. I choose to do this with bicycling and walking in isolation. From yesterday's isolation walk ...

Walking around closed businesses and normally vibrant small neighborhoods, the quiet and the emptiness opens you to a sense of desolation. It can get pretty depressing, if you let it. I don't let it get inside to stay, I stay hopeful and confident that we will beat this thing if we all stay together, but I think the desolation should be recorded in our photographs for our future to remind us.

Today I was practicing social isolation with my daughter's cat. Total lock down is probably only days away in Sydney (too late IMO). The reported number of infections vastly understates actual infections, if data from China, Italy and Spain is a good indicator (which I believe it is). People have not been taking this seriously enough, though that will shortly change. Unemployment has jumped from 5% to 11% overnight with tens of thousands put out of work.

Yes. And it also reminds me of some painting or another I've seen with Angels in mortal combat with The Enemy reaching for the Light. Lots of things associate in my head when I look into it.

One's emotional state is very affectable when being outdoors is constrained to "exercise in isolation" ... 🙂

My wife is an OR nurse, and was laid off when all surgeries were cancelled a week and a half ago. She's been called in a few times to work in her old Day Surgery unit since, but it has now been turned into a negative pressure ICU. This is her mask from Sunday, which is being saved for some homespun autoclaving in our oven so she can re-use it once they run out. When she went in yesterday they told her they had "a few" new masks left in her size. Vermont is still fairly low in number of cases, but we are, like most of the US, doubling every day. Our stress levels are through the roof with this. We are both over 50, and while generally in good health, this kind of work is surely upping our odds of being exposed quite a bit.

Had to go to the shops, stopped at the beach to take this photo of the cloud - then noticed the cruise ship which didn't seem to be going anywhere. On the radio, talk of cruise ships denied entry to port due to COVID-19 infections on board... I think this is one of them.
