Canon LTM Correct Lens for IV SB

I know the 50mm is the common lens for a Canon IV SB. I own a body and want to purchase the correct lens for the camera. Is this a Serenar or a Canon AND is it Black/Chrome or Chrome? Thanks for your response.
 
I don't know if the lens was correct...

In 1967 or 1968 I bought a Canon IV-S(2 or B, not sure which) and it had an all chrome 50mm f = 1.8 lens. I don't recall if it said Canon or Serenar on the front. It was a very good lens. I do remember that.
 
chrome Canon 1.8/50
chrome Serenar or Canon 1.5/50
chrome Serenar or Canon 3.5/50
no black or partly black lenses on a IVSB (build 12/52 to 3/55 according to Peter Dechert)

That tells you everything.........if it`s an early camera Serenar Lenses if late Canon, they BOTH take good pictures and there`s NO DIFFERENCE in look or construction of lenses

I would look for the f1.8 50mm they are reasonable in cost (under $150) and can still easily be found :)

ps: 129455 is a later Camera.....so a Canon f1.8 50mm lens or any Canon Chrome lens with serial number before 25000

The IVSb was the first to have the Canon all chrome 50/1.8, the lesser models got the Serenars till the supply ran out.
the IVSb was introduced in Dec. 1952, same time as when the Serenar name was dropped.
One could have ordered this camera with a 50/1.5 or a 50/3.5 also.

Hi,

For that camera and to have a lens to match it roughly when it was produced then the following

50mm f/1.8.......any solid chrome CANON LENS lens between serial #105500 and #107700

50mm f/1.5........solid chrome CANON LENS around #21000.

I have a IV-Sb S/N 132915 which my dad bought in Korea in 1954 and it came with a Serenar 50mm f1.8 I S/N 109161 and he also purchased Serenar 100mm Telephoto f:3.5 Lens S/N 54182 & Serenar 35mm f:2.8 Wide-Angle Lens S/N 16462

I have the original receipts for the equipment (Dad was an auditor when he got out of the Military ;-) so I can validate that as late as '54 Canon was shipping "EP" IV-Sb with Serenar Lenses.

Thanks Bruce for the #. Nice to know the history of the outfit and to have the original documentation is a real bonus. I guess each item has the <EP> mark?

I'd have to look when I get home but as I recollect only the body & case have the EP mark none of the lenses or their cases are stamped with the EP.

I'll take a look and post back including the purchase date if that will be useful for your research.

BTW - the avatar is actually me in 1964 shot with said camera but it is a horrible scan from a print.

OK - Corrections

The Body (S/N 132915) is stamped EP as is the case
The 50mm f1.8 (S/N 109161) is marked Canon but lacks the "EP" mark. (It came with a clear plastic case also lacking the EP mark with a blue plastic base with a metal insert with a threaded "S" mount)
The 100mm f3.5 (S/N 54182) is marked Canon and has the EP mark as does it's case
The 35mm f2.8 (S/N 16462) is marked Canon and has the EP mark as does it's case
The Universal Viewfinder (S/N 11419) is marked Canon & has the EP mark but it's case doesn't

All were purchased 29th July 1954

Nice outfit and well worth keeping together. The lens bubble with blue based is another bonus as they don't appear very often on the open market as does the Universal Finder with <EP>. I have recorded very few chrome CL 50mm f/1.8 lenses with the<EP> mark as Canon regarded the lens as part of the total package, BUT if bought separately then I guess it would have the <EP> mark. Peter

The amusing thing is that Canon's Camera Museum site only list s chrome Serenar lenses for the 50mm f1.8 & the 35mm f2.8 but the "Canon" identified lenses do exist. They do, however, admit to a 100mm f3.5 with the Canon marking as opposed to the original Serenar lens but the pictures are identical as is the number of elements but the weight is different. I guess I'll have to weigh my version to see if it agrees with the literature.

I look forward to your book - It will sit next to Peter D's tomb on my shelf.

I was originally going to sell my kit to help finance replacing my Canon point-and-shoot with a Digital SLR but I have a roll of 50 ISO Ilford film in the body (& a EOS 400D) so I suspect it is now doomed to be waiting for suitable subjects. Once I get over my Digital GAS (just got a EF 70-200 f4 L) I'm going to send the body into DAG for a CLA (Slow Speed Stickies) and look for a replacement prime lens as mine has a scratch on one of the interior elements :confused: ) Now if I could only find some bulbs for my Flash Unit "Y" ;)
