Hello,

I recently picked up a Cosina Compact 35 E for not very much money.

It's a simple and small enough rangefinder (about the same size as my Ricoh 500 G), but I can't find any info on it. Google doesn't come up with much, so I wondered if anyone can point me to a good source.

I particularly need to know the battery type.

It's worth noting that this is not the Cosina Compact 35 Automatic Electric Eye model, but a later version, which is a cross between a P&S instatmatic and a traditional rangefinder.

For example, the film advance lever is on the back of the camera, half way between the top-plate and the compartment door and the shutter release is a rectangular button à la Kodak 110!

Specifications:
38mm / 2.7 Cosinon lens
25-400 ASA manual adjustment
Copal shutter
Auto / Bulb settings
Light meter with aperture / shutter indications (no battery=not working)
Self-timer
Hot shoe
PC socket
Flash Guide Numbers in metres/feet on lens barrel (annoyingly, when I engage this ring it gets stuck and turns with the focussing ring then jams)

A curious little camera. Any help would be appreciated.

This is my first question on the forum BTW!

Thanks again,

Neil

Hi Neil,

Many of the Chinon/GAF/Cosina, etc. compact RF and zone-focus cameras appear to be derivatives of the successful Konica C35 series. Try Matt Denton's Camera Collection web page (forgot link - sorry) for a great description of the Konica and its offspring. I'm guessing that your camera is one of these C35 clones. These cameras all enjoy a pretty good reputation.

Your camera will probably work with an S76 battery with some tinfoil padding. You may need to compensate the ASA setting a little bit for best results.

Oh, and may I be the first to give you a hearty welcome to the forum!!

I just dug out my old cosina compact 35E - I got it when I was 16 so it is 30 yrs old! I found the battery inside it's case . It is a Watch 357 and I don't remember needing glasses to read that 30 yrs ago!
I hope that helps.
