i guess i do somewhat...despite the fact that i post here in threads, on flickr and a blog...i have little idea how i am perceived as a photographer.

last night i posted 3 new shots to flickr...this one is my favourite of the 3...it has the least number of views and no comments while the other 2 have comments.

My photography makes me happy.
Back when I was in a camera club I was able to win competitions.
Back when I did paid work, my clients were satisfied.
When I make prints for friends and family, they are happy with the gift.
I may be delusional, but I think I'm doing okay.
I don't share much on the internet because I'm not so much into scanning.
When I do show work I get positive feedback, but it's more about satisfying myself.
That's enough for me.

I like the image, but I think that the composition suffers. All the empty space on the left hand side does little for the image. Cropping it out would improve the image IMO. If I was to print the image I would also probably dodge the eyes a little and perhaps darken the edges to draw the focus to the servers face.

right now, it's not about happy or having satisfied clients...been there done that...
my friends give me wondeful feedback (but what do they know?).
never was into competitions so never won any...

right now, it is not about satisfying me...tho that would be nice too, i guess...but more just wondering what other shooters think.

maybe i'm nuts?

An unpaid critique is likely to be slightly more rigorous, in that the critic isn't trying to say what he thinks you want to hear, unless the paid critic is on a power trip and wants to show how much cleverer he/she is than you.

Take some intermediate/advanced photo courses to re-stimulate yourself. Betterphoto.com has some and I am sure you can find more elsewhere online.

You can also join a photoclub. I joined a local one for a while and we would get together and critique each others photos.

Another idea is to get involved with photo challenges. There are lots of websites that have weekly challenges dealing with topical or compositional subjects that will force you focus on a particular aspect and you get feedback from being part of the contest. FredMiranda.com does these, I'm sure they're plenty others.

The other way is to decide who your favorite photographer is and use their work as your critique.

Hi Joe, the expression on the coffee server's face is good. But the whole left third of the photo - what's with that? could you blur it out with a faster lens, or maybe pan the camera to the right a bit?

Fred Madagascar is 😉 on a serious note as far as I can tell you ask the right questions and work hard at what you do with tour photos; that's probably the best any of us can do, no?

It is a good photograph. You are a competent photographer, which means that you approach the subject honestly without preconceived notions and present the information accurately. If you look for a service or person to review your images you will run into problems. The first being digital v. film but most importantly what style is that photographer working in and is it commensurate with your style.? (For example: I found the movie Avatar unwatchable but American Psycho brilliant. Which film style would you send to me for a review?) My personal recommendation is keep posting your work accept the comments but realize that you are the ultimate judge of your own work or you could use Keith.

I agree with the poster who suggested taking some community college advance photo courses. Feedback there would be inevitable. I've done that.
