(built in hood) Can anyone post images from this lens demonstrating sharpness or any other characteristics? I'm very curious about this lens and am considering one for future purchase. I've read many wonderful comments about this lens, but have not seen any images made with it. Also, any commentary on field use from those experienced with this lens would be wonderful.

I don't have any scans from this lens yet, but in use I find it handles quite nicely. As others will tell you, once the hood & cap are on it isn't all that smaller than the Summicron- this is true. However the lens doesn't flare easily so the hood becomes somewhat less than neccessary- if you can take that route, the lens is quite compact when folded. Note- it won't go on an M5 or the CL and collapse safely.
My example of the lens opens and closes easily and operates very smoothly once extended. It gives very nice images- I've not made any big enlargements yet from these negs, but at 810 it is a very fine performer.

Thanks Sepia....

Thanks Sepia....

is your version the current model? I understand the contrast and sharpness are nearly indistinguishable from the 'cron.

Sharpest 50 I have ever used and I own most all. 72 ppi internet images will not due it justice.

I have read it is sharper than the current Summicron at 4-11 without the flare.
It is a wash with the latest 50 1.4.

Same as the 90 4.0 new version. But the 90 2.0 and 2.8 are also the new look. This 50 2.8 falls into the same camp. It shows in an 8x10 print if you use a top class enlarging less.

Yes mine is the current version, and yes at 810 anyway it is darn close to the Summicron. Seems a bit softer in the corners open. Build is great on mine, some folks have had some looseness or wobble I recall reading here, but this one is solid as can be.

I used mine, for the first time more or less "for real" rather than just shooting test shots, Sunday before last. This was a combined test of the Elmar and M3 combination and me trying to get the ergonomics of that and metering by eye (with cross-checks from a VC II meter) all working together. All of that's a bit new to me, so I was reasonably happy with how things went. Low res photos (derived from mini-lab scans) are at:

for anyone who is interested. A quick play with scanning a frame or two myself shows that the quality of the negs can be pretty good (if the photographer can do his bit).

I used the lens mostly around f4-f8, but shot a couple at f2.8. I think I'm going to like the M3 and modern Elmar combination.

I think it has nice bokeh:

The images are terrific. Very sharp/contrasty and the boke is nice as well. I sold a Heliar 2.0 to help finance the purchase of a 'lux now missing my little collapsible. FURCAFE: I was also at the Mermaid parade this year. Whatta hoot huh? I'm surprised that event is not more well known.

Well, I think it's already a little too well-known among photographers as there are probably something like 3 photographers per parade participant! :D I saw @ least 4 M8's in use (not including my own).

at least a 1/2 doz New Yorkers since my return and not one of them knew of the parade.

Peter....interesting comment......

Peter....interesting comment......

with the introduction of the new...uhhh...more "economical" lenses, I'm wondering what will become of the 'lux....and others in the line....I have a feeling they may go the way of limited production....or even cease???

I love mine. I use it along side a current version Summicron and Summilux. I can't exactly say it's as sharp as the other two, but it's not soft, just a little grittier somehow. Ergonomically it cannot be beat.

Here's an example on Tri-X in D76 with natural light from a window.

It is my favorite, almost permanently affixed to my M4.
