CV 28mm f2.0 replacement Lens Cap...Suggestions?

I lost my drop in cap for the CV 28mm lens and normal replacement caps don't fit into the screw on hood. Stephen Gandy wants $30 dollars to replace the cap on Camera Quest and Photo Villiage wants $25 but it out of stock. Those prices are ridiculous for a lens cap. Does anyone know of a viable alternative?
 
A UV filter?

I honestly don't use my lens cap and can't imagine ever selling the lens. If I find it I'll let you know.
 
I never cap my lenses on camera. They all wear hoods to protect them from my greasy fingers. Off camera, they sit in bags, usually with a back cap.

I keep the lens caps for all my lenses in a box so they will be available in case I need to ship them to DAG or a new owner. :D
 
Hahahaha you capless mavricks. Well a 46mm uv filter does cost about the same as one of those replacement caps so that's what I'm going to do, with a rubber band and a lens cloth to boot! Ill make sure to buy all my future lenses at Photo Village. $30 dollars! Absurd!

You're probably right as far as cost of materials go. Let's just add a little bit for the investment in moulding machines, operation and maintenance, so it's now a bit more than a "hunk" of plastic. And we'll buy the springs in.
Now lets assemble it, package it, make a profit for the manufacturer, freight it from Japan, make a profit for the freight company, unpack the consignment, pay US wages, keep inventory, not sell too many of them, pay taxes, want to make a reasonable profit yourself so as to feed your own family - and so now what would you sell it for?

I think you've established that it could sell for only $25 but I sense you're thinking way below that. Alternatives seem to be to go without a cap or cut the bottom half out of a plastic bottle of suitable diameter and slip it over the entire lens. Much better protection all round and no cost at all!
 
I've given up on expecting reasonable prices, but that said I have used Nikon zero diopter viewfinder cover, when the Zeiss Ikon's were twice as expensive. Don't tell anyone. You should be able to find a reasonable cover. I'm always loosing mine, but they usually turn up. My M-Hex 50mm f2.0 is sporting a Contax cover because the Hex cover is missing. It will eventually show. I have the CV 28mm f/2.0 and I have to say that cover is a tight fit.

so don't pay 30 bucks for it.
go to your local camera shop and buy a generic for 2 bucks.
simple.

but you rather come on to stephen's site and complain and then declare you'll buy from his competition.

if nothing else, you're a class act.

The whole point was to find an alternative because the generic caps don't fit in the drop in hood. And where else would I complain about prices if I want my complaints to be heard? Consumers have that right. He's made over a thousand dollars off me I can whine a bit.

That's a good idea about a cap for the hood. I wonder if I could find a slip on cap for that.

It's called "venting" and you can get counselling for it if it continues to be a problem.

For me, the new drop-in CV caps are a bit of a pain to take on and off with the hood in place (and I have relatively small fingers). I will often buy a regular pinch cap that fits the hood - much easier to use, IMO.

It is more difficult to size the push-on caps - even if you measure the hood accurately, the inner diameters of the various push-on caps vary from company to company, and you may end up buying another one because the one you bought is too tight or too loose, and with cost of shipping/etc, this sort of defeats the purpose of trying to save a few bucks :D.

The regular pinch-caps give you a bit more leeway in terms of sizing, so a cap that is a little small can still work fine.

I've capped both my 35 1.8 and 28 3.5 Nikkors with plastic caps from a spice bottle and a fruit juice bottle respectively.
It's not a big deal to cruise the shelves in the Supermarket or Pharmacy and check lids from various bottles, cans (reusable snap-caps) and jars until you find something that fits or nearly fits.
Enlarge it? Use a dremmel tool.
Decrease the inside diameter? Shim it inside with Dymo label tape impregnated with a series of dots or dashes to increase the grip.
Done and done.

A 49mm cap fits the hood just about right. Not perfect, but well enough for when it's sitting in my camera bag. Probelm solved!
