Which one is better on R-D1? I probably prefer 40/1.4, but wondering it might be too long?

i have both (since i also use one on the bessa). i prefer the 35 on the rd1. not too long. but overall they're both nice and good value - especially the 40.

The 40/1.4 makes a decent portrait lens on the RD-1, and allows a relatively-tight head shot without distortion. I find the 35 to be less useful, due to the x1.5 crop factor, and tend to opt for a 28mm in place of that focal length. If you decide on the 40, make sure you can get along with its 'distinctive' bokeh at wider apertures. I don't like the double-line effects at f1.4 / f2, and am hoping to find a 40 CL to replace the Nokton, soon. The harsh bokeh of the CV 40 is the main reason I try to use this lens tight in.
Incidently, the usefully-sharp CV 28mm f1.9 has a 'jittery' bokeh, at wider apertures, which, to my eye, looks like camera shake. I've just replaced mine with a 28mm Elmarit, and my shots are looking a lot calmer.
