CV 90mm... G.A.S. attack?

Hi guys, my RF equippment is made by a Bessa R, a CV 35mm f2.5, and an old Summitar 5cm f2

I'm seriously thinking to buy a CV 90mm Apo-Lanthar, I've read a lot of good things about it, and also the "guru" Erwin Puts, says it's a nice lens.

What do you think about putting it on my Bessa?

i never liked that lens for some reason. Sold it and got a nikon 85mm instead. Now thats a jewel

The 90 is excellent (and that is not at all subjective as I happen to only have it and have not tried anu others...).

Love the Nikkor too but never managed to focus it at f2, close up and on the Bessas.

The 75/2.5 is a great lens, too. Very sharp, nice flare control and
bokeh. And a small lens. Attached a recent example photo.

The 90 is excellent (and that is not at all subjective as I happen to only have it and have not tried anu others...).

I have it as well as a few others 😱 The CV 90 is nice and Leica-like in its redition. Like most CV lenses it is well made, but there are a lot of quality 90s in this speed range (and faster), including the Leicas.

I highly suggest the CV 75 instead. It's faster, smaller (especially when you incl. the hood), and easier to focus. I have both and use the 75 occasionally and the 90 on rare, specific occasions. My normal carry kit is a 15 or 21, 28 or 35, and the 75.

Now I'm "half way" between 75 Heliar and 90 Apo-lanthar (very good reviews, Brian, I enjoyed them)... 🙄
75mm seems to be almost as good as 90mm, but faster and more compact, and better for b&w shots, but I usually make colour slides, and I like to watch them on a large screen, so perhaps the better contrast and sharpness of th 90mm could make the difference!

I've got the cv75 and am considering a cv90 for the extra magnification. I'd just like to be able to shoot tighter portraits.

yup...you start a thread asking about the CV 90 and 9 posts/14 hours later you're considering the 75 instead. You've got GAS, my friend. 🙂

I'm a big fan of C-V glass, but IMO you should consider a 90mm Elmar-C or Minolta, too. The pricing is similar, and (from the C-V 90 images I've seen) I think they render a little nicer.

The interesting thing with the 90 Apo-Lanthar is that it is a true Apochromatic lens. The fact that it costs about 10% of what the Apo 90/2 Leica costs makes it worthwhile (I had both and kept the 90/3,5 CV!). I like it because it is small and lightweight and damned sharp too! It will alao take 39mm filters!
I am not a big user of 90's, but they are nice sometimes. The earlier 90 Rokkors, Elmar's and Elmarits are old designs and it shows.
For travelling I usually throw the 90 A-Lanthar in the bag as a "Just in case" lens. The 90 Apo/Asph Summicron was simply too heavy for that.
If you intend to shoot color, particularly slides I would go for the 90f3.5 as this is were the Apo design shines. In black/white and color neg I dont thnk that it makes that much of a difference.
Of all the 90's, my personal favourite is the old 90/4 Elmar in the collapsible mount. Not a great performer but one of the most incredible mechanical designs. Heavy and not that fast, but I just like to play with the collapsing function. When I want
pictures, I just take the 90 Apo-Lanthar.

I used to have one, but sold it. It just wasn't my focal length, and that was exacerbated by the 0.6x viewfinder on the Hexar RF I had at the time. The frame was so small that even though focussing went well, getting a proper composition was troublesome. The lens itself was good, very good, but if I were in the same position as when I initially bought it, I'd have gotten a 75 instead.

The 90 is a quite superb lens, I sadly could not get a silver one to match my other lenses, but so what It's as I say superb.

Taken on my last roll of Kodachrome 25, a few years ago. The screen does not do the image quality justice, an A3 print is super.
Gawd knows what is wrong with site now, now, but image wont come up!!

Again ... Thanks everybody for all your post! I enjoy reading your comments, they are very interesting and useful. Another consideration about the 90 mm vs 75 mm CV, is that I have the Color Skopar 35mm, and it uses filters of the same diameter of the 90mm (I have a skylight mounted on the Skopar, and I could move it from one lens to the other, if necessary)

I have the 90mm APO, and although i am quite new to rangefinder photography, I have not been able to get on with this lens, I find it difficult to focus and the size of it makes the camera more intrusive - people tend to take more notice of it, than say a 50mm. I have not tried a 75mm so am interested in people's comments on this one, as I was considering selling the 90mm and buying the 75mm.
