I enjoy this thread no end. People seem so unreasonable sometimes. If it would have been f0.9 what would you say then?

'It would never be as good as a Noct!'
'f0.9 is ridiculous, it will be far too big and optically compromised!'
'f0.9, yeah, in the center only'

Many people here simply are not mentally capable of accepting the fact that some Japanese upstart (best known for plastic OEM SLRs) can produce optics that are actually comparable to Leica. And for very reasonable prices too. A Japanese upstart that actually produces Zeiss lenses?

In a few years time, Mr. K. will BUY Leica and THEN you'll all be sorry.

As far as I'm concerned, every time you b*tch about a Cosina lens, God kills a puppy. And I like puppies!

Did I already say I wanted one?
 
Reality check, folks! Mr. Kobayashi and his designers have created an f/1.1 lens, one quarter stop shy of f/1. That's *way* within the error of how most of us meter. And it's affordable. It will cost not much more than most people are paying today for the Canon 50/0.95, which is soft, has a very acquired-taste bokeh and flares like crazy. It costs 1/5 what people are paying for the old Noctilux. 'Tis a time for rejoicing, not carping.

If you need f/1-ish speed, a lot of what is being discussed here is kind of like yelling at the guy who just saved your life because he rumpled your suit in the process. Optical design is a balancing process. Flare control, resolution, contrast, weight, size, cost, ergonomics, bokeh, low vignetting. At that speed, you can't have it all. If the designers have done their job, and Tom's pictures appear to show that they have, it will be a wonderful lens. I like smooth bokeh, too, but for an f/1-ish lens I can conceive of owning, bokeh is last on my list.

f/1 vs. f/0.95 vs. f/1.1... you know what the practical difference is? Advertising copy!

It'll block a fair bit. A 1.5 Nokton blocks some; this will definitely block more. This lens is very close in size to the first f/1 Noctilux. If flare performance is reasonable, maybe you could dispense with the hood, and then you can see things. In any case you will be able to see better than with the last f/1 Nocti with the built in hood.

The knurling looks great; I prefer that by a fair bit to the fine knurling that Leica uses now. As long as the mechanics are smooth, it should be easier to focus than the Noctilux. Too bad it doesn't focus closer. I realize that the performance might have suffered at closer distances, but I would gladly accept that if it went down to .7m.

The 125,000 yen price does not include the 5% consumption tax, but then again neither does the 135,000 yen price for the 35/1.2, so yes the 50/1.1 is cheaper than the 35/1.2.

It'll be interesting to see what the final street price is. I expect it'll be 10% less than the price on the Cosina website in line with other Cosina/Vigtlander new releases.
 
oh i get it... MSRP! haha I didn't know the MSRP of the 35/1.2 was 135000 yen. I thought it was the street price... dang, if this is true, I can't wait to get my grubby hands on this!
 
God thanks Cosina to release such a beautiful lens! I was on the edge to plunge for a noctilux but the cost as always and the limited usability. If I can have this lens for 900€ in french market new, I would buy it in a hearbeat. Please hurry to release this lens here as summer nights are coming fast and my leicas are crying outloud to get this noctilux killer!

Yes, I wonder how close to 1.1 the lens actually is - it is splitting hairs to look at 1.1 vs 1.0.

I know that when I shoot a Hex 1.2 and Nokton 1.2 at the same settings and scene the Hex shot is noticeably brighter. I wouldn't know if that is down to more or less generous maker calculations or coating/transmission differences.

Everyone should buy one of these just to support Cosina. 😉

I'm intending to buy a black one and use it on my black M3. Will look sweet, I'm positive.

The Hex is on my M5, so I can have my own shoot-out!
