always wide open.

The Sonnar is tough. I have now dropped it three times, twice on it's own, rescued by the brass lip of a great B&W filter, and at the weekend, unused to the weight of the new M5, I dropped it from knee height attached to the camera, landing face down distorting the hood. Camera and lens still fine.

Beware of this lens in the Classifieds section ;)

Always learn something when I look a Helen's images.

I definitely prefer my Nokton 50/1.5 to the Sonnar 50/1.5...

1. it is LTM

2. it focuses down to 0.7m

3. it is Helen's preferred 50mm

That is good enough for me!

Perhaps I am missing something, but I think Helen's 50 lux photos seem to have more character and maybe microcontrast. The Nokton ones are great, but something about them is modernly contrasty, or semi digital about them.

Unfortunately I don't have any ZM.
Fortunately I do have some CV - and like them.
The 1.5/50 is one of my favourites.

It Depends what you want at f/1.5 to f/2.8 in character....
I have not owned a 50mm f/1.5 Nokton, But I do own a ZM 50mm f/1.5 C-Sonnar (f/2.8 Optimized)
I like the character of the ZM... Here is one f/2 I think around 7 feet or so.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
f/2 under 2m barely

If you like shooting wide open between 1m & 2m, and you like sharp.... Nokton.
If you want a bit more character... ZM 50mm C-Sonnar. very slight softness at f/1.5 between 1m & 2m

Could someone please explain the thing with optimized for 1.5 or 2.8 (or give me a link please)? Sounds like two different versions. Is one of the versions the standard that I get when I buy it new, or can I buy two different versions?

Initially they were all made to be optimized at 2.8. For the last year or so, they've all been optimized for 1.5 ON FILM and Zeiss doesn't guarantee that it will work 100% on digital but they will send it to Germany to be optimized if it is off for any reason, free of charge.
