So you use a 2 reel tank but only put 1 reel in? You should always put 2 reels in no matter what, in case the bottom reel slides upwards during agitation.

The early Pattersons needed a plastic clip to secure them if you used inversion otherwise they would move up the inner spool. The later ones should be secure even through inversion but you do have to start with them pushed down on to the base edge of the spool. The clips tended to lose their grip if you stored them on the spool!
You need to know which way you hold the camera to tell if it is a leading edge or trailing edge effect.
If the development is the problem the rebate printing should be the same as the 'top' of the frame.
Your friend is nice, and few of mine ever carried anything for me, even the dogs...

In this photo, there are two bands - perhaps when the spiral was slipping?

I've never had a problem with one reel in a current Paterson tank. when I started developing film all I had was a universal tank with one reel. I knew no better
FrankS suggests wrapping a rubber band above the reel if it's a problem, sounds good to me. You're a lucky man, I can only guess at the repercussions if I asked Sylvia to carry a tripod, she doesn't even pause while I reload , hence pictures like this

Found a sample of the effect of shutter bounce.....always on the right side, couldn't be the developer since it's on the short side. The problem never returned once I had it adjusted.

Edit: I had one that showed the double banding as well, but can't find it. I originally thought that shutter bounce would result in overexposure of the affected area, not the reverse. But if it's the first curtain that bounces, it would partially impede the view of the second curtain before it finished it's travel. At least that's my theory.

Not so new now.
I'd go with the low chemistry, too-just had it happen to me, and it looked just like that. I think it was the fixer that was low.
