Are there any Diafine users here from Australia? Where do you source it from? I tried Vanbar in Melb but no such luck. I wanted to start developing with Diafine at the beginning for its foolproof reputation. But it seems its not available easily. Thanks!

Where abouts are you in Oz? I would suggest getting it from Freestyle in the US ... I ordered some chemicals and other things from them recently and the whole process was painless and it got here quickly.

It's pretty cheap in the States ... about $13.00 for a pack to make a gallon. I'm thinking of getting a few things from them in the next week or so and possibly we could work something out ... from memory someone else I was in touch with was interested in Fuji film and there's no reason why we couldn't do a combined buy to split shipping costs etc.

Cheers ... Keith

I'm more than happy to work something out here ... I'll be ordering 20 rolls of TRI-X, a Combi Plan developing tank, some cartridges for my Epson printer and I might try some Diafine also.

I'll keep bumping this thread to keep it alive for a few days and if anyone else wants to jump on board with some film or whatever I'd be happy to pay up front then forward on to whoever when it all gets here. I think from memory 'fdigital' (Gavin) in Brisbane was after some Fuji film as well and we had discussed this sort of possibility via PM previously! :)

I live in Adelaide and have a 1 quart pack I can give you to get started. It may be past its use by date, but they have worked fine for me so far. PM me for details.

One thing to remember for the non-US people, each can makes a US gallon (3.8 litres) not an imperial gallon (4.54 litres).

Yup, this silly fool messed up mixing this the first time :)

I bought a bunch by mistake. I will, maybe, use it all one day! In the meantime I can let you have a gallon packet (US). That will last for ages! 2 baths are very long lasting.

Another alternative is to mix your own, should you be handy with brews. Try Barry Thornton's 2-bath. As far as I can tell it's pretty much the same stuff. Barry's Better Brew.

Curiously, it probably didn't make much difference making 4.5L as against 3.8L, in fact.
The way 2-baths work you just leave it 'till the time is up - a slightly dilute bath would probably give the same results.

Keith: you've never had a problem with film fogging? I'd assume they'd 'nuke' it in customs with the x-ray machines?

I'm not Keith :) but I've never had a problem importing film. For some reason they only 'blast' passenger luggage. The levels they use otherwise are apparently quite reasonable. I am talking films up to 200 ISO. Above this I couldn't say exactly but I'd be happy to give it a go.

The last package that came from Freestyle had two very large orange stickers on it stating that it contained film and advising not to X-ray. I've bought a lot of film from OS lately and had no problems with this scenario! :)

Well in that case I'd be in for some film.. :) I'm in Canberra, would that be ok for you to forward a pack of 20 or 40 films down here?

I'd be happy to transfer by bank or paypal any money before you order!

Cheers,
Gert

True, the time may be 4 min instead of 3 but should not be a problem.
it is probably more imprtant to rememeber not to agitate in bath B after the first GENTLE agitation

Keith: why do you choose Freestyle? I just checked B&H and they're quite a lot cheaper on certain items ($20 less for 20 rolls of Neopan 400 for example).

Just curious as to why you choose them.

Thanks, Gert

Hi Gert,

I just had a look and remembered why I ordered the Neopan I got from Freestyle. The Neopan B&H had listed was cheaper per roll than Freestyle but it was imported grey market by their own classification. Their equivalent US Fuji was 50cents cheaper than Freestyle but I disovered they were ten dollars dearer on freight. :p

I think from memory when I balanced out the other things I got, XTOL D76 etc and calculated the freight, Freestyle came out cheaper for my total order.

Incidentally it seems to be inconsistent ... Tri-x at B&H is $3.99 per roll and $3.75 per roll at Freestyle. From my perusing of both sites Freestyle were better over all for the things I buy regularly ... especially when freight was taken into consideration. :)

ps ... the cheapest HP5 I have been able to get so far has been from Yuri at Fedka.

Last chance ... to share an order. I'll be ordering from Freestyle in about three hours so if anyone wants to add some film or whatever to this please let me know by 11pm Oz time.

Gert has ordered some Neopan and Tri-X ... if you need to have a look at what Freestyle has check this link.

Keith, do you know if liquid chemicals (ddx, ilfosol) can be imported?

Chris,

Some can and some can't ... if you go to their site it will let you know. They identify the items that can't be sent via air.

The only disadvantage with liquids that can be sent I've discovered is their weight will cause higher shipping costs.

Cheers ... Keith :)

I'll hold off on this order until tomorrow night I've decided. It's currently up to about $500.00 Australian and the good thing is it attracts no extras ... GST etc ... until it reaches $1000.00 Australian. Freight currently is around $60.00 US. :)
