The best camera is one that still works!
Sounds like the intro to "Money" by Pink Floyd.![]()
That was the first thing I thought of also!

Cool to hear them...!
FE sounds too metallic compared to my FE2, and the M3 is really quiet!

never gave it a thought.
Interesting to hear of the lower sound of the M7 shutter. It would certainly be missing the clockwork buzz at slow speeds. But I remember being impressed at the discreet snick of my M2 compared with my Pentax H3v and Spotmatic at the time. I still like that sound.
The M8 is noticeably louder.

i'll bite... my current M3 is not particularly quiet nor was any of the leicas i have ever heard. random people i shoot in the street are as oblivious to the sound of the M3 as they are to that of my motorized F2. just this morning i kept firing away at a lady in a café as she was merrily going about her business; no one else seemed to care either. i think this whole loudness business is not terribly relevant in the scenarios commonly brought up in the discussion (though i could see the point in a hospital, courtroom, funeral home environment, where every dB counts--but then again, i haven't shot those in the past quarter century so what do i know...)

There is more hype about "street" than about Leica shutter silence
Loud or not, I like the sound - of a well serviced M that is. Maybe the OP's has an over-tensioned shutter ? If it's up to spec and still too loud, try a leather half case.

I'd forgotten about my old M8 ... definitely louder and more penetrating than my current D700.

Amen bro! Refueling hot aircraft for 5 years didn't help me either!

Coming from Nikon FM2 and FA I was almost disappointed at how quiet it was. I felt like it didn't take the picture without hearing that resounding clunk of shutter and mirror slap. I still am amazed at my M6's subtlety.

I don't miss the sound of cracking walnuts.

I was not really under the impression they were the quietest out there only that they were pretty quiet. I'm happy with my M5 and MP. They have the sound of quality and I don't mind hearing that.

It does have a certain crunch to it.
And just so i don't get flamed for that, It's not as bad as my canons whirr-whirr-whirr-beep-beep-plunk-ka-chunk.

no hype in sound of M7 shutter. my M8 is distinctly "louder", although not loud IMO.

"A leaf shutter camera without a moving mirror - like a TLR, View Camera, or little Contax T - is always going to be much, much quieter."
I'd like to add my Hasselblad SWC to this list of Quiet cameras. It makes such a slight click that I wondered through the first roll of film if it had worked at all. No mirror, no curtain, only a leaf shutter.
My M3 DS is very quiet. My M4 is also quiet but has a distinctive 'clack' when the shutter closes- like a solid finish to it.
I came from the land of Nikon SLR's and some even older stuff, so the Leica for me was extremely quiet and for me, that lived up to the hype.

Not disappointed coming from a Nikon F3hp.
When I purchased an M8, it was definitely louder than my previous RFs but I wasn't too disappointed with that either.... I had anticipated something much louder from all the buzz on the net. What I found a little more annoying was the stapler sound it had...
