I lost faith in software companies when the software that came with my M8 mysteriously stopped working when I went to update it ... the attempted update effectively disabled the program!

When I contacted the company about the problem through their help line they told me that the program (which was fairly basic) had been superceded by a new one and they would provide me with a key and details to download the replacement software .... which they never did even after a few polite reminders. This left me with no way to convert the M8's DNG files to tifs which impressed me no end as I hadn't had the camera that long!

That particular software manufacturer can go to hell ... they'll never get a cent from me!

Pretty crappy behavior by a software company.
 
As an aside, in the cases of the Adobe Suite you have an entire generation of young people growing up practically fluent in Photoshop, all because of illegal acquisitions. I doubt the recent passing of "Photoshop" from a noun to a verb in the popular vernacular could have happened without such distribution.

This isn't a defence of piracy, just a musing on how it's affected Adobe.

That's a really interesting observation! I did notice a while ago at a place I was working at the young kid not long out of school seemed to know photoshop inside out. I asked him how come? ... and he just shrugged and said 'everyone uses it don't they!'
 
I purchased the CS4 suite through a university purchase program. LR3 came with the M9 that I purchased.

The Adobe suite of products are used at the University of Washington in the photography program and the students have access to the suite on the campus network as well a generous discount at the university book store if they care to purchase a copy for use on a personal computer.

When I upgrade to CS5 and LR4 in the future it will be purchased.
 
I purchased Photoshop originally with an educator's discount and have paid for upgrades ever since. Each of my friends have also purchased copies. Currently I am using the CS6 beta which I downloaded from Adobe's site. Just on a personal note, I could care less what others do!
 
LR3 at full price and an upgrade to LR4.
CS5 at a discount because I am once more a student, was actually purchased for InDesign more than PS.

I used pirated Photoshop back in the day, but probably not since 6.0.
 
Threads like these need images .. in fact a lot of threads of late need some images posted in them . It's spring, no excuse for not getting out there and photograph .... I figure some are just coming out of hibernation and need to stretch there bones a bit , shake off the winter ......

I'm wondering why a member with so little interaction with the rest of the forum (only 33 posts in almost 2 years) would make this a poll where the names of the respondents are recorded.

I voted before reading the thread, and now I'm sorry I did.

I too purchased my software through the University of Washington. Many schools offer special software licensing to students and employees.

Up to 80% off their products for students, although the only difference between the two is pricing - the program itself is identical. If you're looking for something easier I'd recommend Lightroom.

If you're implying this was set up for more sinister reasons you're very wrong. I'm at art school and out of the hundreds of people I know personally, maybe two of them paid for any Adobe products. Adobe might care about people pirating their stuff enough to add preventative measures into the software, but if you think they're going to address such an absurdly large scale problem by making a poll on a largely film-based forum with the attention of luring maybe sixty unsuspecting people to say they stole it is frankly ludicrous.
 
I bought CS3 Extended - on sale - through the university bookstore when I was a student, with prizemoney that I got for winning best poster at a student colloquium. I have not upgraded it as it does what I want, though I wanted a more recent native RAW converter which led to Lightroom... as far as Lr goes, I bought V3 a few weeks ago when B&H had it on sale for $69.95 and (after quite a bit of futzing around) qualified for the Adobe PAU to Lr4, which arrived this morning in a FedEX-smooshed box (nobody can mangle a package quite like those guys).

For my Nikon DSLR I greatly prefer NX2, though I sometimes export the unsharpened TIF to PS and finish it off there. I got NX "free" with my D300 (I bought it as soon as it was announced) and eventually upgraded when it also went on sale.

This is a weird poll, IMO...

I paid for Aperture legally (dont use or own Light room).
I also have the Adobe Creative Suite (paid for legally).

I refuse to steal software.
Just because there is no hard good, doesn't mean it's not stealing.
People who say otherwise are lying to themselves to justify their actions.
It's not yours, you didn't pay for it. End of story.
