Different 40's for Leica M-Mount

I just bought a used one off of the Bay, I thought it was a multi-coated one, but turned out to be a single-coated one. Hasn't arrived yet, so can't add any observations of my own yet. As I shoot B&W mostly, I guess I'm happy with the single-coated one, but honestly I'm sceptical about the differences.

That was a lucky error, the single-coated actually commands a premium over the multi-coated 🙂

Warning! OT question: does anyone use those lenses with a M3 ?
I want a modern Summicron to complement my 50 collapsible and I´m attracted to Summi-C or Rokkor because of the compact size and speed (the 50 Nokton is too big for me on the M3)

Anyone with M3 and 40Lens? Framing possible?

Yes and yes. Just used the entire VF frame and you can approximate the 40mm quite well.

regards

I'm wondering if anyone has first-hand experience with the single-coated vs. multiple-coated versions of the CV 40mm nokton. Is there a noticible difference in any image parameter (contrast, colour saturation, flare-resistance)?

from what i've read and pics i've seen on the net, there seems a very small difference in actual photos between the 2.

i have a 40 summicron available if you decide to go that route.

The MC version of the Nokton does flare less than the SC version. Modern lens design does help the Nokton in that the SC version does not flare any more than a CLE multi-coated Rokkor. I find the MC Nokton a bit too contrasy for my tastes though so try the SC version first to see how you like it. Im sure you will keep it in the end.

Thank you for your replies, especially Palaeoboy. I'm glad to hear that the SC version of the 40mm Nokton may be less contrasty than the MC version. I had a CV 25mm snapshot skopar that i sold due to the excessively high contrast, although overwise I thought it was great.

Sleepyhead,

You've made a great purchase.

I can't compare directly to the MC version, but I have shot thousands of frames on my SC version of the Nokton-40. It is a gorgeous lens, great in black and white, but also in colour. In fact, I feel that it renders colours more beautifully than any other lens I own. It is also very, very resistant to flare.

I use it on my Bessa R3A and on my Leica M6. For the M6, I modified the lens to bring up the 35mm framelines (a very simple modification) and I've had no problems framing this way (no lost heads or feet, etc).

I have some samples on flickr:

Sockeyed, I'm psyched! Can't wait to get the lens in the mail. I've checked out your photos on flickr and above, and there are many very impressive ones. The picture of the pier above looks super sharp and with lovely colours. THANKS, Yaron

very nice piece of 50' technology, but could any one tell me why zuiko made a 40, the finder is nice too

very nice photos

The SC seems like a very nice lens.

re: framelines -- as you progress as a photographer, you'll probably regret the mod you made, but this is a different thread altogether.
