I have noticed that stores sell inexpensive compacts based upon zoom reach , with no information on sensor size max aperture / 'shutter' speeds etc.
Some 20-30 year olds scoff at a camera with just a nom 28-150 zoom [ in old money ].

I was a touch apprehensive buying my 40 yr old daughter a Fuji XF1 with it's short zoom f1.7-f2.8 lens as most of her mates expect on lens to do everything.

However, she was raised on SLRs and has a Panasonic G1 etc , so it was not an issue .

I do note however , that the XF1 and Apple 'phone get a lot more usage .

Maybe the snapshot landscape has not changed so much , but digi-boxes are so much more capable in this respect .

I think expectations come when you value photography more than convenience. Outside of that, most of the low end digital cameras (whether P&S or phone) are so much better than the low end P&S film camera (which may have only had one shutter speed / aperture combo), that most people are satisfied. Additionally, most photography is social based... i.e. look at what we did, what we like, and what we bought. Generally, it's only when you want to do something with photography, that goes beyond this, that technical concerns come into play.

I was flabbergasted to realize that the oly tough tg3 i bought (mainly) for underwater use has only 3 aperture settings (=f2,f2.8,f8 at the widest zoom end). And the b*tch cost almost 300 bucks.

Sensor size won't say much to average camera users, in any case. Better to write on the box "slr like image quality" instead of sensor size.
