I've been reading some reviews and I think I like the idea of having it, it seems great to me, it's available here for the equivalent of 470 $ what do you think of it as a camera with manual features, and of the price?

I have a close competitor, the Nikon P5000. Available for US $399. While I find the autofocus slow, it takes some wonderful pics, the B&W mode is INCREDIBLE (it has built in contrast filters and makes noise look like grain) I find the pictures really impressive. It has easier to use manual controls than the A640 with a command dial and side buttons a la D80 and the same processing engine as it as well. The hotshoe is another bonus and I use it frequently with an SC 17 cord for my flashes (usually a Vivitar 183 or 2800... sometimes an SB 600. It also has full iTTL flash exposure.
Just figured I'd throw you another option at a cheaper price 🙂

Don't mind the toning of the B&W, I did that myself. the normal tone is quite neutral.

A few differences, it gotta be better in low light and image stabilization, but i think canon will be faster...

The guy i deal with(camera and film) suggested a totally different camera, Fuji 9600, it ranges from 28-300mm, besides that nice variety in manual control, but it looks very traditional and besides that, it's heavier and bulkier...And adding to the fact that what's in my mind has a converter, i don't see a problem, he suggested that one because it's close to the same price range and with more pro-options...

Call me crazy but i know what i am going to buy, i am getting the sony h2, readign reviews and discussions, it has few problems but the 12x zoom is a dream to me, and it's not really more expensive than the canon a640, i played with it today, and i can't wait to buy it...
It's just better in every aspect, also the fact that the dealer is givin it to me with a 512 mb memory while the canon comes with 32mbs only...It's slightly more expensive but it's nothing for the zoom and better low light and image stabilizations, also more memory...
The only plus for the canon here is the rotating lcd which is not something i'll regret.
