There is a wealth of information out there about digital darkrooms and I have a few ideas on equipment I want but I want to know a little about printers. Can anyone from experence tell me a good printer under 300 dollars US that would take fine art quality or close to it prints. I also would love information about black and white prints from a printer. Links to good articles would be nice also. Thank you all.

Most consumer printers (like e.g. the canon pixma series) produce good color prints. If you want good b&w prints you should look for a printer that doesn't only have a black ink cartridge but also several different grey ink cartridges. I haven't checked printer prices lately but those printers are probably above your price limit.

HP Photosmart series - look for the models that use a multi-gray cartridge. I've shown black and white prints to a pro photographer friend of mine and he thought they looked fantastic. I have the one that prints 8.5 x 11 but I'm considering upgrading to the 13 x 19 soon.
