Do I need film holder to scan film on Epson V750

Hello,
I have a scanner Epson V750. The problem is I bought it on Ebay and it didn't come with film holder. I have to buy a 35mm holder to scan my 35mm negative. I tried to scan with medium format but, somehow, the scanner cannot recognize the frame and separate it into thumbnails as when I scan with 35mm film holder. I would like to know if I can use the scanner without film holder or not? If yes, how should I do?

I think the software recognizes the type of holder and adjusts its settings, but you should be able to do that manually. You can scan anything that that you put on the glass. The film holders are designed to hold the film 1mm off the glass because that is where the best focus is. So without a holder you may not get as crisp results. There are a number of alternative holders that may be better than Epson's, like the ones by Better Scanning.

1. You can get original OEM foder from ebay, last time I've checked it it was $29.00
2. When you scanning medium format film with epson software you should choose the negative size 6x6 or 645 or 6x7, when you'll do it your thumbnails will work correctly, the reason it is mot working now because you should use same negative holder for different sizes

Using Epson Scan in the "Professional" mode, there is an option box to select whether or not you are using film holders. Selecting the correct option will result in the scanner focussing slightly above the glass (for when film holders are being used) or focussing on the top of the glass (as when scanning a print, for instance). It is also possible to scan films directly from the glass as well as prints (and, indeed, this is the only option for scanning any format larger than 4x5). The V700/V750 has a dual lens system. The option selected also determines which lens is used.

I can't recall if the thumbnails will select automatically when you're scanning film off the glass, but if not, selecting the "normal" tab in the preview window will enable you to manually crop the frames.

The best long term option is to procure some more film holders but in the interim you can scan off the glass as explained above.

I have another question about scan on V750. Sometime, when I scan 135, the scanner only recognize a part in the middle of some films but not all of them. I am not sure if the reason are they are too dark or something.

In professional mode you need to uncheck the box marked "thumbnails". Then do the preszcan and select the area to sscan.

OT question: Does VueScan recognize scanning directly on glass and adjust focus? I have been using it instead of the Epson software, as I am used to VueScan.

I have a V700 epson and it came with a FIilm Area Guide that is a black thin 9 1/2"
x12" gasket that fits on the glass and has tabs on it that tell the scanner to focus on
the glass I scan 120 to 8x10 negs and pos film with no problem at all using epson and Vue scan software.
The epson web site is down for maint But give them a try and look under parts for V750

Call local Epson office, should be cheap to get, $7 iirc. Or use Vuescan, you can customize crop easier
