SNAP ON rear cap for 5cm/1.2,2.0 3.5cm/1.8,2.5

attachment.php

Many nikon users buy a lens without their rear cap or front cap. front cap is not a big problem, because there are so many substitutions.
but, absence of rear cap is very complicated problem. even if you already have an original rear cap, you may not be able to change it quickly.
Here are some tips for making snap on rear cap for Nikkor lenses. it's very comfortable and light. I want to share these tips with nikon forum
friends (FOR 5cm/1.4,2.0 and 3.5cm/1.8,2.5)

First of all, you need an art knife, a film case, an instant glue (I used loctite 401) and a spray can (flat black). the film case is really important.
I tried to find many film cases for rear cap, but only one can greately fit on lenses.

See bellow pictures

You can use, All kind of FUJI film case and its cap (I used Reala and velvia in this post) and AGFA APX 400 or APX 100 cap

1. Rear cap for 5cm/1.4, 2.0

Cut off 1cm~1.5cm bottom area from FUJI film case. that's all !!!, but it'll be perfectly fit on your 5cm lens! :D
Next, rear cap for 3.5cm lenses. it's gonna take more efforts than 5cm.

Cut off inside rim of film cap carefully with an art knife.

Attention plz ! this is very important. cut offed rim is still large for cap. So we have to cut a little. If you want make a cap for 3.5cm 1.8, you may cut off about 2mm,
for 3.5cm 2.5, it would be 1mm. I would like to say cut it off and check it with your lens. If it doesn't fit, cut a little more, finally you can find appropriate size.

Do you find the size? now glue the RIM on a FUJI's film cap. I recommend you to use enough instant glue. because they'll never stick together easily. DO NOT try to put your D.I.Y lens cap on your lens until it completely dry. Or instant glue will make your lens blind! (many instant glues make white vapor while they are drying. )

Ok we are in the Final step! If you want to make your lens caps more nice, "paint it black !!"

I wish my tips could be helpful for many nikon rf users.
Thanks for reading my post. :)

I've got a Jupiter 8 50mm f2, and it came without caps. Now please forgive me if I am mistaken, because I've never seen either in the flesh, but I assume the Nikkor and CV 50's have the same type of mount as the Jupiter, that is to say their mounts go completely inside the lens mount on Nikon rangefinders, rather than having the "flange" that sits over the mount and covers it.
If this is the case, then you can make a lens backcap for the 50 as I did for mine.
there is a detergent for washing clothes called Zero by Woolite. Here in Canada it comes in a couple of sizes including one of 473 ml.
This bottle has a pink, soft plastic cap that doubles as a measuring cup for the product. The top of the cap is fluted, and is exactly the same diameter as the lens mount.
Using an Exacto Knife, simply cut an end slice off the cap end so it's about 3/8" inch thick), and then cut out the three slots for the "wings" of the lens mount, making them each about 1/8" deep, I'm just making up these measurements, and you'll have to trial fit and cut until the cap fits over the end of the lens.
Then if you care, spray it black and voila. Done and done.

Aha ~ Thank you rbsinto, it's very informative!! :) , I'm not sure would I get a 'Zero' in Korea. or I try to find another detergent or medicine cap for them.

And does anyone knows alternative rear cap for millennium 50/1.4? If you have any tips for it, let me know please.

(re-uploaded picture of the lenscap with lenses.)

My particular need is for a front cap for a Nikkor-w C 35/2.5. Lost mine in Paris. Bummer. Anybody got a spare? It must be a very strange size. I shoot with it all the time on my Contax IIIa.

Anyonhaseyo Park-shi,

Thanks for posting your good tips :)

Another option for external mount lenses is an SC mount Voigtlander rear cap. They cost about 700 yen (US$6) and Voigtlander dealers such as Camera Quest should stock them.

Another option for internal mount lenses is the rear cap pictured below. This one is aluminium and sells for about 1,800 yen in Japan, though they should be available elsewhere too. I got this one for free when it came attached to a used lens I purchased.

If you know of anyone in the U.S.A. having them, please let me know. I would be interested in one for internal mount in aluminum.

Thanks a lot, guys ~ Especially Jon, a rear cap that you showed above is really informative! one of my friend will go to japan next month, Is it possible to buy a aluminum cap for millennium at camera shops in kyoto? I really want to buy it !! :)

Here's some photos of the item to look for (sorry about the low quality, I took them with my cell phone camera).

The price at Yodobashi Camera is 2,572 yen.

I'm not sure what stores are located in Kyoto, but you should be able to find it at any of the major chain stores like Yodobashi, Bic, Sakuraya etc.

Aha~There're so many useful lens cap! I appreciate your infomations. the black metal one looks really nice. I'm going to print those caps picture and give it to my friend.
And...sadly, my thread looks like no longer useful... keke~

What a timely thread as Im trying to locate a couple of these caps for the internal mount 50's I have. So are these Hansa ones only available in Japan or are they something you can get anywhere? Those pictured from the Ukranian seller for Jupiter/Helios lenses I am guessing is the same? (I havent had much to do with the Russian lenses.)

There is a also a friendly guy selling on eBay from Japan with the ID "nobbysparrow" who has specialized into small spare parts and caps for our vintage classics.

He has a very nice machined aluminum rear cap that will fit. Engraved "For Contax", though. That said, it's probably possible that he has another batch released with either no engravings or with "For Nikon", at the buyer's choice. Anyway I wouldn't mind fitting this nice "For Contax" engraved cap on my Nikkor 50/1.4 Millenium if I had one.

I just purchased one of these caps and although it fits snugly enough its not a bayonet cap at all its just a slip on one. I was a bit disappointed when it arrived the service from the seller however was always very good and fast delivery.

The Hansa type caps pictured above by Jon are the type that I am after but cant get locally here in Australia. If anyone is in Japan doing a bulk purchase please lem me know, I will be in!

Kiev caps will fit, buy a J12 with cap throw lens away, oops wrong forum again.

I'd try the j12 first.

The One From Nobby Sparrow Is A Nice Rear Cap That Says For Contax. It Is Made Of Aluminum For The Internal Mount Lenses, And It Pushes On. It does not fit the Voigtlander 50mm F3.5 Heliar as it is .003 to small. It may fit the Nikon 50mm or Contax 50mm lenses fine? Nobby says to cut a slit down the side But I Would Not Consider That An Option.
