Do you love a photographer you used to hate?

I'm surprised no one has brought up William Wegman. He is known for those friggin' dog photos but he has actually done some nice stuff with Polaroid material and so on. He actually has a nice body of work but he will always be remembered for the dog shots. I don't blame him for his never ending dog pictures. He has made a fortune off them. Still, those dog shots drive me crazy.

This thread inspired me to take down some photography books and spend some time with them again. I gotta say, Robert Franks has an amazing eye; and now I've gone off Winogrand for some reason, I'm not seeing him at the moment. But I also paged through a memoir by Robert Capa called "Slightly Out of Focus" and he has some amazing shots there. I'd remembered the events he shot, but I'd forgotten his eye.

This is a bit of a tenuious link, but I'm beginning to think that some photographers work is only appreciated by other photographers, street photos for me are a classic example. I myself have found this as others have, with Winogrands work.

Your average man in the street's idea of a good photo is usually (round here anyway) totally different to that of a "photographer" who may look past the initial image for a deeper meaning.

When we look at a famous photographer's work and initially dont like it, are we acting like Joe Public, and then, later, either trying to convince / force ourselves that we like it because they are famous.
