Do you still use a soft-release?

I talked with Sherry Krauter about soft releases. She pretty much told me they were accidents waiting to happen.
Sherry told me that she had repaired several Leica M cameras over the years that had either been dropped and landed on the soft release or had the soft release smashed/banged/mashed down while attached to the camera.
She said the amount of damage caused to the internals of the cameras was "astounding."

Oh, I'm sure that's true. But my work is not about preventing accidents to the camera, and the little thing makes the camera more usable for me, which trumps the added risk and occasional photo of the interior of the camera bag. "YMMV" as they say.

No. I don't mind the occasional lost frame. I do mind the uncertainty of pulling the camera from the bag and not knowing whether the camera is ready to shoot, or if the film needs to be advanced. Anyway the M already has one of the most ergonomic shutter releases on any camera.

Like others here I think a small softie works well on the Fuji X cameras, though it's not necessary.

i have some abrahamson softies glued on my M6 and OM-2N so they wont unscrew themself. tried some cheaper chinese brass and metal ones, but sold them quickly, didn like their finish. over all my shooting got faster and lost them tilted horisons at the, so for me they work as meant to.

I'm not obsessively careful with my cameras, either. I use them and if they get scratched or whatever, so what? Stuff happens. I didn't buy them to sit at home and polish them.

Still, I take whatever reasonable precautions I can to avoid damaging them. Repairs are costly - particularly on Leica M cameras - and being without one of my cameras for weeks on end while it is being repaired is a royal pain.

I don't know whats my problem, but the soft shutter release always makes me extremely difficult to do an AE lock. It full presses the shutter button 99% of the time!!

I'm very frustrated lol.

I know a repairman who said the exact same thing to me. Also about the AR1 Nikon release, back in the day he saw a lot of pros destroy their F and F2 by accidentally dropping them on the release. And a F or F2 are hard to kill...
