the hexar af goes out in today's after work mail and my like new cv 28/1.9 is already in the mail to me.

flyfisher tom offered a trade that i couldn't pass up.

i had decided to keep the hexar as a great snap shot/point & shoot type camera for social functions where pics are nice but where i'm not wanting to do much work. with auto everything it was the perfect camera.
but then i realized (to my horror) that what i really needed was a better digital point & shoot.
i'm thinking of the canon s3is but i'd like one with a bit wider lens.

so my canon g2 and likely the m3 with elmar 50 will be on the block soon.
i know it's sacrilege to sell a leica to fund a digital point & shoot but my photo budget has only so much flexibility.
and the zi and cl are staying, no question.

the more things change...

Joe, take a look at the Nikon Coolpix 5000 for a carryaround digicam. I know, they're a 5 year old model, but it's a 5MP camera and it's firmware upgradable to RAW. Also it has a 28-85 lens which sold me ... plus you can get one for about $200 (at least that's what I paid for one that was still new in the box).
And you won't have to sacrifice the Leica.

Joe, sorry to hear you didn't like the Hexar. Check out the GRD, it's pricey now, but will come down fast, I think.
 
Wow.. never actually witnessed someone selling a film to buy a digital until now. I thought people kept their film cameras until they were convinced that their digital replacement was actually good enough. What a plunge!
 
I never got the feeling that you were that taken with the Hexar AF. Sounds like you're happy with the move. But this little philosophy of yours about the photo budget having only so much flexibility... have you been speaking with my wife? I knew it! It's all your fault Joe.

i did like the hexar but for my needs i think a small digital is a better fit.

i just came back from the pro shop in town, picked up 10 rolls of delta 100 and played with a few canon digis.
that s3is is very nice and quick too.

I did read the whole post, and actually I'm quite impressed with your choice. It seems like everywhere I read, people are stuck on using M3s. If I had the money, I'd be getting some of those nice Zeiss lenses.

The S3 is a nice cam. I discussed it with a friend who was impressed with the fact that it didn't have a 30 second limit to recording videos. I believe it's one of the few that actually allows you to fill the card with video. He ended up getting a mini DV cam though. Don't know if you care about recording video much but it is a rather nice feature for family events, etc.

I have done both. Sold film to buy digital and sold digital to buy film. My head hurts now

i have mixed feelings about selling the m3 and am somewhat flustered...

you're in edmonton? i thought i was the only one.

Well it's only a city of what.. a million? And the murder capital of Canada. The odds of someone on RFF being in the same city as me are ridiculously low, but then again I'm new. Met a guy named Arda who's on photo.net. Nice fella. Sports a Canon 50/1.2L. My gf, also in Edmonton, is getting herself an R3A with th 40 nokton soon. You'll be seeing rangefinders on the streets, crowding your shots 😱

I digress from the topic though. You know what? It's absolutely strange when you want to take a photo of something in your hands, to show someone online.. and you can't.. cause you shoot film and it'll take a least a day to process and print the roll. Yeah, I need a digital point and shoot, and at the same time I don't.

In reference to JoeFriday above me, I'd also like to know why you chose the Ikon over the M3. Built in light meter wins the day? 🙂
I understand the mixed feelings, but you've still got a Leica, and a ZI. Actually, why the M3 over the ZI? Aren't those CV lenses screw mount? (With the exception of the Nokton).

this is an edited version to an answer i gave on another photo site...

the m3 is from '55 and in remarkably good shape. the camera feels wonderful in my hands.. i love the double stroke silky smooth advance and the slight sound of the shutter. it is noticeably the quietest camera i have ever had. it had been cla'd a couple of years ago, before i bought it. but the hassle of changing film keeps it in the slow sunday walkabout category of use. the same with the cl. anytime i have to remove and find a place to store a peice of the camera when changing films is just nuts. i'm sorry, it's the dumbest thing about the camera. and i can't work quickly if i need to. that being said, when i'm really old and can barely lift it, the m3 is likely to be the one i take for my slow moving walks.
and then the zi. it's really beautiful. in fact i struggle with the idea of getting another, in black.
it has a slight raspy sound when i advance the film that i wish it did not. and a similar sound when i rewind the film. i think all is well and it's smooth but i would prefer silence. the shutter makes a noise that is not loud but not as quiet as the m3. outside it is not noticeable at all. in a quiet theatre i would prefer the m3 but i find it too hard to change film in the dark with it, so the zi would be the choice. the zm lenses are pure magic. they are new, clearly, and feel like heaven. i had no qualms with the new cv lenses but side by side there is a very noticeable difference in feel. the old canon and leica lenses that i have had can't be compared as they were old and well used. i haven't had a new leica lens in my hands in years.
i really like the zi and zm outfit and could be happy the rest of my life with just it. it's more modern and i like that.

the m3 is the most wonderful feeling camera my hands have ever held.
the zi is the most beautiful to look at.
they both work well but i would go with the zi if i had to choose only one.
 
Ah, understood. Leica cameras are heavy. The M6 is as heavy as my old Pentax K1000. It's ridiculous. Also, loading the film.. yeah don't get me started 🙂

Thanks. I understand your choice now. You shouldn't feel bad about it cause, as they say, cameras should be used.. not kept around to collect dust.
