Hi folks,

So yea, my summarit has a little dry focusing, how does one go about opening it up and cleaning/applying new oil(?) to make it nice and smooth!

I previously unscrewed the top/front lens elements (as a whole you know) to get access to the aperture blades, it was easy as pie now I am so cocky, I want to fix the focusing so it's smooth as buttah. Or is lubing up the focusing bit a very different matter?

I've found this ( http://www.rangefinderforum.com/forums/showpost.php?p=1013115&postcount=5 ) post, is this all there is to it?

Anyone care to do a step-by-step as to how to get access to the focusing bit, helicoid(?).

Merci

Were I you, I'd send it out for the job. Not because you can't tackle it but to lube it properly you need to separate the helical. I don't know off hand how many threads there are in that lens, but most have five or six. They're called interrupted threads which means it's just a section of thread. When you reassemble it you have five start points on each section and it's not going to focus correctly unless you have the correct threads mated.

Don't use OIL, a lithium grease works fine.

you also need two things

- Access to the proper lubricants. Many non-camera specific lubricants will migrate through out the lens, including the glass and you will wreck the lens. Do not use any sort of oil.

- You will probably need to collimate the lens so it focuses accurately again, after you took it apart. You will need an optical bench / collimator.

I would send it out and get it taken care of by a professional. It's a nice lens. Depending on where you are I'm certain people can send you some recommendations.

My original Summarit had a dry spot in the focus and my mechanic stripped it and said due to the old brass to brass hellicoid, it had a tiny spot of oxide in the thread and the process of completely stripping it, using a liquid cutter to remove the oxide spot and then re assemble ammounted to more than the lens was woth! I sold it on eBay as a project and bought another one from RFF, problem solved!
Andrew.
