Never had a problem shooting at the Fuji base iso.. The shutter speed is fast enough and there is enough f stop available..

I don't understand your assertion of horrible evf usage at base iso? Never had a problem in daylight in some pretty bright sunlight.. If u are using something like a xp1, then u also have the ovf to use anyway.

The only time I can c base iso of 200 an issue is if are shooting wide open in extremely bright sunlight. Which is something I am not sure how many people would really do that often or at all.

The base sensor iso also determines how well strong light can be controlled using the EVF. If you are using a fast lens wide open with a high base iso in bright light, the VF will not show enough contrast and detail.

Never noticed the problem.. Will try to get a look at this when I can.. Right now it is raining where I am.. But as I said, ovf on the xp1, not an issue.

Thank you all for the great responses. I appreciate all the well thought out considerations. I think I will do several things:
1. Wait on an upgrade to the DSLR until after Photokina, then decide on a new body to replace/work with the D 300 and current kit.
2. Buy another MF film camera and shoot more black and white film
3. Look for a camera like the X100 or X100s as a small camera to carry on vacations etc.

there's always the RX-1. if you go for the non-R version, there are some SCREAMING deals to be had on a second hand one. I don't think you can do better for the price, as long as you're OK with one focal length.

I have a full fuji kit and love it...love it...

But I would not say it would be ideal for what you want to shoot...especially sports video...no way will any of the fuji's keep up with the d300 and the 70-200 for sports, especially video.

You might want to look into trading up to a used D300s which has some advantages for video and very slightly better noise reduction but otherwise an identical body.

I think you have the right kit for sports and video for now... The fujis are really great but for size and street shooting and not for long lenses, quick focus, video...at least at this stage.

Such as actually implementing video capture? 😀 I may have it wrong, but I don't recall D300 having video at all and D300S being only 720/24p.

If OP is really interested in video, I think a fairly new Nikon body would be the easiest way forward. Panasonic and Sony should be considered as mirrorless alternatives.



Edit. It seems it is possible to shoot video on D300. The Nikon SDK allows tethered video (well, quick enough JPEG) capture at the resolution of 640x426 at 25fps.

Upgrading to a new (er) Nikon body gets me video which could be useful for soccer scholarship preparation AND it gives me a body that works with the current kit of lenses, flashes, and other accesories. I would also like a smaller, simpler kit that is lighter to carry than the full D300 and glass. So, I can just remove the battery grip and carry a couple of small primes and be good to go.
